[Max] I need help! / Re: Material Build up
« on: 2021-11-30, 13:26:40 »
The left one seems fine, for the new physical material you should plug the Glossiness map into the roughness slot, and then change the Roughness mode to Glossiness (under Material's Advanced options).
Some materials come with Roughness textures instead of Glossiness, so you don't need to change anything in that case.

Hardware / 3970x RAM Upgrade - 3200 or 3600mhz
« on: 2021-11-24, 12:38:54 »
Hi guys,

First of all sorry if there are similar topics to this one already discussed, feel free to merge them if if you like.

Somehow I have managed so long using 64gb of RAM (full ram popup is a docked window at this point) but it is time to upgrade!
I am using a 3970x on an Asus Prime TRX40 Pro and want to go for 128gb (4sticks of 32gb). I  would like to know if the difference between 3200 and 3600 frequency or CAS Latency would be something noticeable, in Render times or overall system stability, or if I would rather go for a budget option.

For example, the following kit from Gskill seems like a nice pair of 32gb sticks, 3200mhz with CL16-18-18-38, currently going for around 300€ (so 2 of those).

Thank you and have a nice day!

Hardware / Re: Laptop Suggestions
« on: 2021-07-15, 18:21:01 »
is there anything out there that has more than 8 Cores and can take 128Gb ram? I'm looking for a solid solution for being able to work on the road...

I am pretty sure the most you can get from consumer-grade laptop CPUs is 8 cores. But there do exist some manufacturers that use Desktop CPUs in notebooks, like Origin PC.

[Max] I need help! / Re: Rotate a texture/Bitmap?
« on: 2021-04-08, 16:00:13 »
AFAIK the only way is to plug a Linear Float Controller to the W Angle Slot of the CoronaBitmap (right click on the bitmap -> show all additional params -> click on the plus sign on coordinates).
Then you would have to plug the same controller to every bitmap that you have already loaded.

But i would also be interested in being able to batch edit bitmaps, say edit several bitmaps using one ColorCorrection map, maybe using the same way Grasshopper (Rhino's plugin) handles trees.

[Max] I need help! / Re: 3DS max lagging
« on: 2021-04-07, 17:45:00 »
3ds Max 2020 had also started lagging on me after importing a lot of props meshes / plants, and having probably hundreds of materials in the slate editor.
I tried the following things, and now everything is back to speed. I don't know what exactly worked, so you can try them by yourself:

1.Use Cleaner Script.
2.Move everything to a new Max file.
3.Reset 3ds Max user preference settings to default.
4.Move to 3ds Max 2021.

Hope it helps!

Hi,

just wanted to add that i am too experiencing the same problem. I have not yet found any kind of solution, i thought it got better after completely disabling windows defender + firewall, but the problem persists.
I am using 3ds max 2020 with Corona 6. The scene has ~60 million polygons and lots of textures. I am using Forest Pack and lots of proxies cached to RAM.

The problem is not the autosaving feature, and RAM usage can be ~60% and this still happens. 3ds Max becomes unresponsive for at least 5 minutes, and it can happen when ending IR mode or quite frequently when editing material notes, using the slate editor. I have noticed that when opening the file everything is snappy and after some time working it starts to appear.
Strange thing is CPU usage remains at ~100%, as if it is still rendering.

Unfortunately this means that when running long sessions and having to meet deadlines, you can literally be working for half the time, while the other half the program is just frozen.

On a side note, related to the program becoming a time bomb after days working on a new project, importing/merging files becomes a lottery, especially when Slate Material Editor is open, as it will often crash 3ds Max. This is probably a 3ds Max problem, and not on the Corona Side.
