[Max] General Discussion / Re: Compositing Beauty
« on: Yesterday at 17:32:36 »
You're welcome! Sorry that it took me so long to reply, but my todo list is bursting at the seams. :)

Here is one test, Corona 11 HF1. The scene looks fairly simple, but it has lots of objects and takes over 20 GB while rendering.
The one with black direct override actually rendered a bit faster. Other than that, the stats are almost the same (rays/s).

When rendering in 3ds Max, the adding operations are done in linear space and then gamma 2.2 is applied to the final output (if you are using the gamma 2.2 workflow, which you should be using).

By default, if you just save your elements and add them in Photoshop, you are adding elements saved with gamma 2.2, which is different than what you do in 3ds Max (linear space).

To fix that, you need to make your elements linear, add them, and only then apply gamma 2.2 (or sRGB gamma, or other correction as you wish, if you don't want your result to be exactly as in 3ds Max).

Method 1:
- Enable the Development/Experimental Stuff rollout and use a string option -
The string option is: colormap.additionalGamma = -1.2
It subtracts 1.2 from the original 2.2 gamma making it gamma 1.0.
- Save your elements in 16 or 32-bit
- Open in PS, Add, apply gamma 2.2 on top

Method 2 - works only in 3ds Max 2024:
- Go to Rendering > Color Management > set it to "Unmanaged"
- Save your elements in 16 or 32-bit
- Open in PS, Add, apply gamma 2.2 on top

I would also suggest disabling color management in Photoshop. Otherwise, you will most likely see your image with sRGB gamma, which is slightly different than gamma 2.2, so you can see small differences, for example in the darkest areas.

Hi, the CMasking_ID render element seems to be working fine here. If you can't use it, can you explain what exactly you are trying to achieve?

Please check the other replies in this thread. Most likely this is a 3ds Max issue and there are some suggested steps how to fix it.

Hi, I started a support ticket #213244 for you. We will keep you informed about the progress.

Our Maxscript documentation is now available at
As usual, please share any feedback you may have.

I am not aware of any issues. Next time if you experience something similar, please share more details, for example:
- what exact page are you trying to access? (exact address)
- what exactly is happening? (is it frozen at a blank page, showing some preloader, error message?)
- what browser are you using?

[C4D] General Discussion / Re: Chaos Vantage
« on: 2024-02-23, 16:04:16 »
Chaos Vantage is a whole application with its own UI and real-time GPU renderer -

If all goes well, we may have Vantage support in Corona 12 -

That would mean, for example, the ability to walk through your scenes in real-time, change lighting, materials, and more. BUT please note that it's still early, so there are no promises at this point (and I am not the best one to share such updates anyway). I'm sure Tom will drop by here soon. :)

This is currently expected because of the way Corona handles overlapping volumes. We understand that this is unwanted from user point of view and it is logged as a bug. Hopefully we can improve it in V12 (but not promises at this point, sorry).

We made some tests and we are generally getting almost identical results in Corona for 3ds Max and Cinema 4D.
There are some small differences, mostly in the appearance of normal maps. There could be various reasons for this, but the most likely explanation is that the same bump value (for example 0.75) is interpreted differently in 3ds Max and Cinema 4D.
So there may be some tiny differences between the same asset loaded into different host apps, but it does not affect their overall appearance. If needed, you are always welcome to adjust asset materials manually.

[Max] General Discussion / Re: lightmix - lights values
« on: 2024-02-16, 17:45:45 »
LightMix "remembering" old values used to be the default behavior in Corona 4 and older. We understand that this is not always wanted and we have it logged for the devs to review.

[Max] Bug Reporting / Re: Corona 11 Hotfix 1 crash
« on: 2024-02-16, 16:24:17 »
(this is already being handled in support ticket #209244)

We generally do not mention the hidden/experimental settings in our help center or documentation articles.

Just to clarify: this specific case is not related to backplates at all. It's the same issue, but it's caused by objects with visibility to camera and reflections/refractions disabled (trees).

Unfortunately, right now we don't have any solution to this or a workaround which would allow you to get the effect you are after without any issues such as unexpected shading, sorry. We have these cases reported to our dev team and they are being actively worked on, so we might see some updates in Corona 12, but unfortunately I cannot promise that.

Yes, this should work fine in V-Ray.
