That one sometimes automagically changes by itself, especially with new versions, so always worth checking it is back at 1 - glad it was the fix here and we've got you up and running!

There is an ongoing fix for the new color picker reverting / changing albedo and color temperatures, so was wondering if that was what you are experiencing - to explain the thought process for the question :) However, this would be Corona 8, as 7 still has the old color picker, so is not the case here (also why it is important to always mention the Corona version when reporting a problem).

It's pretty much never safe to switch if there is even the smidgeon of a possibility you will at any point want to go back to an older version of Corona. Of course you can install and run old and new versions alongside each other, so new projects can be in new Corona, and ongoing projects can remain in previous version Corona. This means one long ongoing project doesn't have to stop you taking advantage of new Corona coolness in your other projects :)

What is your Image Upscaling Factor just above this?

Which version of Max, which version of Corona, could it be that the color is set using Temp or Albedo in the color picker?

Which version of Max, and just to check, which version of Corona 7? Which denoising are you using and are there lots of render elements in there or just a straight Beauty? Using any sort of network rendering? Last, if you go to the frame that failed and render it as a single frame (or restart the rendering of the animation sequence from that frame), does it work then, or does it always fail on that particular frame?

Yes curvature is the preferred solution for this (as you won't get that "object nearby seems to be casting a shadow" effect - it will only depend on how the geometry is changing at that point, not on other objects or other parts of the same object "casting shadows").

I think combinations of Color Spread, Ray Directionality, and Max Distance should let you achieve similar results to the direction offset (been a while since I used AO as dirt though I confess, so I may be wrong in what that let you do.....)

Caustics and B&G most likely unrelated, as one is done during light transport (caustics) and the other is just applied as a 2D effect after all pixels are rendered. If you don't mind could you share a little more info - at what sort of resolution does the B&G stop working (we already know about caustics having problems at higher resolutions btw so we can focus here just on b&g), and how much RAM does your system have? Thanks!

Sorry for the frustrations here. Yes, the old 1 WS + 10 Render Nodes should show up as "1 GUI and 11 Render Nodes" under the new system (as our workstation in the old system contained one render node by default). And yes, that should still apply so long as the subscription is kept renewing.

If there was an interruption in the payment which caused the subscription to drop, please contact our support team at support.chaos.com and "Submit a Request", asap after any failed renewal, let them know the situation that lead to the interruption in the renewal process so they can look into it. If that hasn't been done already, I'd suggest doing that right now :) If you can share a screengrab with them that shows the Licenses section, so we can see what it is reporting to you that you have available, and of course let them know the email the licenses are under etc. that would be great.

AO is simply "is the surface occluded?" in other words, is something casting a shadow onto it (this is the main original use of AO after all, to fake contact shadows). PS - by casting a shadow, this is not related to shadows from actual light sources in the scene of course, just "close enough it would be casting a shadow from rays from all directions from say an env. light or from light bouncing evenly around the scene"

On the Licensing page, what is shown when you click on Licenses (rather than License Servers, which are a different thing - licenses are how many GUI and render nodes you can use, a License Server is what checks in with home base to find out how many licenses you can use).

If you render the problem frame again individually (ie not rendering the whole image sequence), does it still have no b&g off the water? Not suggesting this as a fix, just as a diagnostic piece of info, ie this frame always renders incorrectly vs. this frame randomly renders incorrectly.

Closest suggestion I can think of is to build a set of three or four "groups" of the boards where the boards in that group add up to being exactly the same width as every other group, then scatter them at fixed distances.

15
Not as far as I know, as this would require Scatter to be aware of the size of the geometry before scattering and mathematically go "Ok so the next scatter should be 6 inches from the first, but this one is an 8 inch board now, so the next scatter should be 8 inches away". Instead it scatters by fixed pattern or randomly (and then avoid collisions simply removes anything that happens to overlap after the fact).
