Title: Reduce Quality of Distant Objects/Matierals
Post by: BigAl3D on 2020-12-18, 00:37:44
I can't remember if C4D has a feature like this or not. Say you have a Cloner set to Grid Array and a complex model. Is there a way to tell C4D or Corona, at render time, to reduce the resolution of the most distant meshes to reduce render times? I don't know if Corona itself has anything like that. For my situation, I have a bunch of car models outside, in a large dealer parking lot. When some of the cars are in the distance, clearly, I don't need crazy detail in the mesh or in materials such as displacement.

Hi Alex, There is a way to do this. You'll need to create a low poly (or reduced) version of your car. And it might be an idea to duplicate those materials and turn off the displacement just for the mid to low poly versions. Use the LOD object and stack your meshes from High (top) to low (at the bottom). LOD mode: Children, Criteria: Screen size V. You'll see the LOD bar be updated with some colours, this represents your meshes in relation to the camera's distance to the object. The camera is identified as a circle under the LOD bar so you can see when it is about to reach the other meshes. It's a bit of a mouthful so I have attached a short vid. I hope that helps.

And for use with a cloner, this might help.

Thank you for your reply. Yes, I have since looked into the LOD object. I completely forgot about that one. I found a better explainer video on how to use this tool. I'll give it a try and post back.
