Awesome this worked for me as well! So strange that I never had this problem until 2024. It removed 15k animation layers it said. But how did those came to be? I ony did 4 very basic camera animations in the scene I had problems with...

I really need to switch to another 3d package...

I have a feeling this is **possibly** malicious... (more on that later)

I do the scene clean up very very regularly. I clean up, then a day or two later I need to do another clean up. It's almost always the same number for me, 19 thousand and something.

I suspect it 'resets' to 19000 when I paste in an object from another file (which is also in need of a clean).

So if I clean up the scene, continue working on it and then paste an object... I need another clean up.

My suspicion is that this is some sort of virus or something similar? Or maybe not.. I dunno

This animation layers mess has been going on since 2020 days or maybe earlier. We've been using Forensic for years and it helps a tonne. Just in habit of running it before every save and before any major render, clean anim layers, clean empty layers etc.

I doubt very much you have a virus. But Forensic also checks for that btw.

Thanks Alex,

Silly question, BUT...

I've always been a bit afraid to use the clean anim layers... does it delete animations keyframes that I've set-up (and need for animations!?)

Never had any issues like that, no. https://help.autodesk.com/view/3DSMAX/2023/ENU/?guid=GUID-ACAD407C-B079-4DAB-9DD0-6C8DC22389EF

Found this thread whilst looking for a solution for the same issue - 3dsmax very slow to close, mostly with scenes with lots of layers, textures etc.
The solution I found, which has already been suggested, is to use the Prune Scene script. I have just tested a scene that took around 2 nminutes to close. I ran the prune scene script and it then took only 1 second to close. It's a paid for script but well worth the money and you get free updates. It also has active/passive virus/malware detection which has saved me a couple of times.
I'm not saying this will help eveyone, but it did the trick for me. Just be careful how you use it!

As a side note, I used to work with Vray and don't recall having this issue...

You can also use the newest daily build of Corona (or wait for the 11 release) which has the new Power Tools with a similar scene cleaner: https://forum.corona-renderer.com/index.php?topic=40442.0
