[Max] General Discussion / DR/networking tips
« on: 2016-04-25, 12:40:59 »
I know that I should put all textures and assets in one place in the network but for now I don't have a server I only have 2 computers I use one as a WS and the other one as render node it is very annoying to copy all assets each time between 2 pcs (...)

There is absolutely no need for a (dedicated/real) server if you are working with just a few computers. Just create a network share with proper rights on one of your machines and use it as the asset resource for all participating nodes (using UNC paths of course).

Good Luck

Thanks for the latest changes, now it´s perfect again.

Many of them are caged inside tight and uncomfortable IKEA Helmer drawers which get hot at work. A real minions life! :)

Some more notes about this:

- Having no popups is only a side effect (for me) although it´s pretty handy when people here fooling around with photoshop do not even notice that their box is frequently captured for rendering :) But most of our DR servers are dedicated anyway.

- When running DrServer as service it gets quite fail save (power loss, reboots if by accident automatic windows updates are enabled, possibly other users working at a node/ws and so on) because it is automatically restarted when a reboot occurs and any logged in users have absolutely no influence. This is equally or even more important for the LicensingServer (which I also run as service for this reason).

- A windows service is easily remotely controllable. You can do this with standard windows GUI tools or by script. So a manual deploy even of dailies which come as installer is a matter of seconds to deploy for me: extract to a directory, run script, wait 1 minute, done. (screenshot: script updating render nodes). I would never update/test dailies such frequently if I hadn't this option.

Implementing drServer.exe and LicensingServer.exe as windows service should appear on the agenda in the long term imho.

This sentence made my day.

If I understand this correctly, it should be possible to use a font which does not need to be antialiased again and use (dabbler googling) wxGraphicsContext::SetAntialiasMode() with wxANTIALIAS_NONE. Then it could be nearly the same result as the previous stamp without losing portability?

If yes, then this is a vote for doing it like this. If not - well, then at least the size could maybe slightly increased?

Thanks and
Good Luck

It´s not mentioned in the changelog (yes, maybe part of "Misc UI tweaks"), but the renderstamp font has changed to some antialiased one?

Is there any reason (e.g. a pending size option?). The older (without antialiasing) was muuch better in size and readability.

In my eyes he already is. I usually do not post anything related to artistic values for various reasons. But even and especially the colors in the milk&honey shots are just awesome. Could not resist :)

Looking forward to the making of!

now with the latest dailybuild I still cannot use DR

:o[

But don´t forget the logfiles when reporting. Have you had a look at them?

It does not work (and has never) because of this part of the spawning parameters:

Code: [Select]
-frames:-5
which 3dsmaxcmd.exe is not able to parse correctly ("error parsing frame list"). You can try quotation marks in every combination like crazy - it just doesn´t work. I think this is because you are able to specify something like '-frames:10-99,5,2' as well.

And .... ahh, found it:

Gonna mantis a reminder.

where can I find the negative frame number you mean?

I meant just the current frame number you are rendering. When the timeline is set to -10 to 100 for example and you are trying to render frame -5 you get exactly that error (because it´s still not possible in max to command line render negative frames, thanks to the you-know-who company).

I´m sure this could be evaluated by drserver so that a comprehensive error message could be sent to the master. Maybe I´m going to put this on mantis as a tweak request.

Apparently that was not the case in your scene :)

But you should definitely try a DR rendering and check the last few lines of the DrServer logs (drData\DrLog.txt and drData\MaxLog.txt) to get a hint what´s going wrong.

Good Luck!

Would you mind changing the default value of the beauty render element into 0%?

I totally agree here. Additionally default denoise amount should get around 0.6

Good Luck

(...) why do i still can't use DR in latest dailybuild (...)

You are not by accident trying to render a negative frame number there in your screenshot? Unfortunately the current framenumber is nowhere to see and the current frame is still not part of the Corona VFB window title. But this would be a typical cause for that error message you get.

Good Luck!

(...) the new stop/cancel distinction (...)

What do you mean with "new"? It never has been different? Cancel has always been "interrupt immediately and gimme my scene back, discard everything."
While Stop (cVFB) was: "Stop rendering, save files, just do everything as if some (other) regular stop condition would have been reached and continue with next frame (if present)."
Same with denoise now (fortunately!).

Good Luck

But be aware as there seems to be a bug with IFL files, reported on mantis, not yet assigned:

Quote
1. When a bitmap with IFL sequence is used, frames of the sequence do not change from frame to frame if that bitmap is used as a submap (e.g. ColorCorrection, Output - haven´t tested others). This affects interactive rendering AND standard rendering (even when sending the scene to backburner).

When used directly as a map, the correct frames of the sequence are rendered but then:

2. IR crashes when material editor is open.
