Title: Skylake X
Post by: Ryuu on 2017-06-27, 10:58:27
Anyone already got their hands on the new Skylake X CPUs?

From Anandtech Corona benchmark:
i7 6950x (10-core Broadwell): 4,110,984 rays/sec
i9 7900x (10-core Skylake X): 5,490,776 rays/sec

Intel made numerous improvements for the Skylake X cores, but I still find 33% performance boost kinda hard to believe. OK, it's just around 20% boost if we account for higher frequency of the newer CPU, but it still seems too much :)

Seems more than promising, too bad the 18-core is so far away.

Pretty interesting times for people who do CPU based rendering and gaming. And good timing for myself who was planning to upgrade this fall!

I'm interested to see what ThreadRipper has in-store before I make a decision.

Same.
Hopefully by then DDR4 and GPU shortages and sky high prices will have normalized. DDR4 prices right now are beyond painful.

Yeah this.

In fact, nand shortage should remain until 2018... those prices are here to stay at least with memory : /

But those pesky cryptominers could take a rest :- ) My brother was saving for cheap 580 and heh is he baffled.

I don't think that you can expect any surprises here. Threadripper is based on the same Zen core microarchitecture as Ryzen. Unless there are any serious scaling problems, it should have just twice the performance of Ryzen.
