Title: Railgun
Post by: Ludvik Koutny on 2016-11-28, 21:42:17
Hi,

so a past few days, I could not sleep much so I modeled myself a railgun :) Spent part of friday and weekend days working on it.

Modeling is all inside of 3ds Max, shading is procedural, mostly using Corona AO. Everything is box mapped and there are no UVs aside from few planar projections for decals.

I don't think rendertimes matter but someone will ask about it anyways, so it was around 30 minutes per 2560*1440 image on my i7 5930k.

Something that will hopefully break a streak of houses, furniture and cars (not that they look bad ;) )

Quake 3 railgun <3
Too bad the upcoming Quake Champions one seems to suck from what we've seen from the trailers. :-(

Hi,
The model seems familiar. If you've modeled it please put wireframe. Of course it doesn't seem realistic and I think you've definitely used UV map But it's generally good.

I, on the other hand, think it looks incredibly realistic and believe that you didn't use UV's, having followed many of your tutorials.

Absolutely stunning work! We're reaching a point here where I'm not sure if there's even anything left to improve.

I presume he's used Vray and Ptex for texturing. It's not Corona, I think. In Vray you can texture a high poly very easily using 3d software like Mudbox.

@fa2020: So basically you are saying Rawalanche is lying:

- You think he stole the model instead of modeling it himself
- You don't believe he textured it in Corona - but think he used Vray
- You are sure he didn't just use box-mapping and a few planar projections for decals

What the f*** are you talking about?

Following Rawalanches posts, tuts and work during the past couple of years years, I absolutely believe he is telling the truth about this stunning work!!

So we deduce you haven't modeled it by yourself and all those photos are fake. You are using pre-made model with all the texture maps and then render it using Corona. The photo isn't realistic too.

Your non of willingness to show the base low poly makes us to deduce your model is pre-made. I don't have the link.

Really goog work. Hats off.
I really like the ventilation (?) under the cables. And the hose around the cable.
The materials are stunning. Especially the use of worn edges. Although I think the wear and tear on the black metal right under the visor is a bit to high.

Overall: Great attention to details and shading. Top!

Yeah... I shown a video where I tumble around the model in 3ds Max. What could possibly prevent me from just enabling wireframe mode... except from messing with him :D

In many cases, pre-made models don't have low poly and they have been saved as high poly editable mesh so we can find out the originality of the work and catch red-handed guys.

Thanks,

Yeah, the overscratching is a little drawback of procedural approach. Scratches often appear even on places where they don't make sense. I usually just paint those areas out with vertex paint, and use vertex color map to mask out AO scratch mask. But in this case, I was too lazy I guess. Or rather, I wanted to finish the project before losing motivation :)

Ohhhhh.... ! So game artists first model low poly models, and then convert them into high poly? I never knew that! :D

I meant models are found online. They never give you low poly and the only thing you get is high poly which has been triangulated.

I personally would never even thought of using someone else's asset without giving credit :)

But some people do... people who usually think about such things because they are prone to doing it themselves :) And such people then find redemption in assuming that everyone else has to be doing the same thing otherwise they would not be able to achieve anything. :)

Why he should do that? And if he worked on the low poly base and once finish the project he transformed everything to an edit poly object that means he used another's one model???

Why is suddenly everything so tense?
I mean it's a very nice presentation of a model and a shader technique. It is nothing suspicious about this.
The argument that you need a low poly model to prove it's your work it is not very reasonable. And I am sure that you know it too.
I'm just curious why do you insist on this particular model? Is it that you had experience modeling these type of models or just a hunch?

Anyway Rawalanche great job. No need to overanalyze things when the first impression is good.
Keep the great work as usual.

I am not sure if that was not double-trolling.

But other than that, Ludvik obviously stole the model from me. I started modeling it from a box and I DO HAVE the low-poly version from the beginning of the modeling phase. Attaching it as a proof.

Yeah!

I am definitely sure I saw that shape before! I bet that if you show us a wireframe, it will have 6 faces, two of which at the top and bottom, other two left and right, and last two in front and back! I definitely saw that being sold somewhere.

But I am definitely not clean myself... Not only do I buy models, I buy those tutorials too... Those Corona tutorials are just bought stock tutorials, and then I just put my content in them and claim them my own. If someone asked me for low-pixel version of the tutorials, I'd be totally screwed. :D

Actually my last tutorials do not seem that much popular for some reason :|

I mean for example the car one I had a really great feeling about, but the reception was a bit lukewarm, compared to something like PBR shading one, which I've put a lot less time and effort into, yet it blew up. People generally seem to like just very basic material setup tutorials for some reason :)

Don't worry. Project oriented tutorials hold immense value. People were probably thrown off by the lenght of the videos. I myself couldn't watch the whole project yet, but I plan on finding time to finish it!

Ludvik, while your car tutorial is really professional, personally i find it somehow out of place in official Corona channel. It is really good and i enjoyed to watch it, but it has little if any to do with Corona. While aforementioned PBR and light related ones are trully unique and very needed by comunity. Nonetheless, i try not to miss any tutorial from Corona Team and especially from you ;] Keep them coming, eventually they'll find their viewers.

I thought the car rendering video was one of the best tutorials I've ever seen, watched all 5 parts from start to finish and will probably do so again at least once or twice more.  The youtube videos (long and short) are hugely valuable to me and one of the reasons I've switched to Corona as my primary renderer.  Keep them coming!
