Thanks, maru!
You guys rock. I hope all this hard work pays off for you. :-)

Sound's really nice to me. Maybe I don't need a powerfull PC after all and can rely on my beloved Mac.

Hey Kyanu,

why not buy the 1700 and overlocking it a bit. The performance difference between the Ryzens is so little but the price is so much higher. So why not overlocking the 1700 to 4ghz. You will need a decent watercooling system but thats no problem.

Alternative:
My build is a dual xeon E5-2690 V1 setup. with a cinebench score of over 2000 and the whole system only costs me about 1200€.

Grüße, Tom

Dear Tom,

thank you very much for your recommendation. I was thinking about the 1700X as well for the same reasons you already mentioned. I've seen a rig online built with the 1700X that could edit 4K videos and cost under 1000 $. But unfortunately I don't feel technically expertised enough to order the parts and build a PC on my own let alone overclocking the CPU.

I ordered a "ready to go" PC, but that was with 32Gigs of Memory and a GTX 1080 somehow slower than my rMBP (mid 2015). So I sent it back when the support couldn't give any solution to that problem. Your build sounds really intriguing since the PC I ordered cost way more.

A second solution is running C4D on my rMBP and invest in a node?

Viele Grüße zurück,

Lars

Hi,

the problem in your file is the volume parameters of the water material:

In absorption color HSV parameters put H200 S2% V100%; Absorption brightness 100%; Absorption distance 8cm (if you increase this water is more transparent).

In scattering color HSV put H230, S100%, V15%.

Your file is from c4d R15 and if i save it with my R18 you cant open it.

Let me know if you solve

Thank you so much. It finally worked! :-)

I would like to hear about your experience using the Macs for rendering. I think about using my RMBPro and a render node. I have the feeling that my Macbook is pretty decent for modeling even bigger scenes. But I would like to know if there is a way to not only render but also work with a render node or the power of another system. But I guess it's only possible to render.

I forgot the most important setting: in the refraction settings of the water material turn on (under refraction behavior) Caustic (slow). If it doent work send me your c4d file.
For fireflies look this https://forum.corona-renderer.com/index.php/topic,12284.msg89798.html#msg89798
Sent you a PM. Still nothing. Curious to find out what my mistake was.

I never even once managed to see any kind of caustics in my renders. Would anyone of you be so kind and give me some tips on how to achieve them? I followed your path but no caustics what so ever. I tried water as a simple plane and as a box, used displacement, checked "caustics" in the refraction channel and checked volume as well, although I'm not quite sure what values I'm supposed to use.

Hi, there are many ways to achieve caustics. Here an example:

1st-render settings: in performance settings enable devel/debug mode; in develpment/experimental stuff under basic configuration in render engine select Bidir/VCM.

2nd-model a swimming pool and assign a corona material with diffuse white 80%.

3rd-insert a plane for water surface: for it use a material with no diffuse; activate reflection; activate refraction; activate opacity with brightness 50%; activate displacement with c4d_water shader in texture; activate volume with color 5% cyan and absorption distance 5cm (or more depending of the plane water surface size), volume scattering deep blue color, brightness 25%, mix mode add, mix strength 50%.

4th-standard corona sky and corona sun, insert corona camera with exposure -3(EV).

I wish this will help you.

Thank you, synolog!
I did everything you mentioned but still no result. It must be jinxed, I don't know. Seems so easy and yet it doesn't work.

Btw: Could you also tell us how you solved the firefly problem? I'd really like to know that once I figure out the damn caustics. :-D

559 is not the worst price, as we have it selling for 580 eu. The biggest money eater here is the 1080 TI.
Still 100 bucks more than the 6800K here, and I don't know if it's worth it. And yeah, the 1080Ti is really expensive. But a good friend of mine strongly recommended it to me.

9
How much does it cost in Germany? Here in Czech Republic, the 1800X is priced around 455 EUR (without VAT).
559,- EUR. https://www.alternate.de/html/product/1333130

2.4 k euro for a Ryzen system sounds a bit too much. Also you might hit the ceiling with only 32 gb of RAM very fast.
Thanks for the advice, Freakaz.
I was wondering about the prices, too. Seems to be pretty expensive here in Germany in comparison to the States and other countries. I couldn't find one offer that was significantly cheaper than the Intel ones. I'm really stuck...

Thank you all so much for your help. I really appreciate it!

I narrowed it down to two systems:

One is a high end PC with a Ryzen 1800X, GTX 1080 Ti and 32 GB Memory for 2.400,- EUR. The other system includes an i7 6800K, GTX 1080 Ti and 32 GB of Memory for 2.600,- EUR.

Now the big question is: AMD or Intel? The Corona benchmarks are good for both. I think the 6800K lies somewhere between 2:30 and 3:00 mins. The Ryzen lies somewhere between 2:30 and 2:00 mins in boost mode.

Take a little risk and save some money for theoretically more power, or take the safe route and spend a little more for a little less?

P.S: I'm coming from an i5 4570. :D You don't want to know the benchmarks for this old fella.

A node is a machine you just use for rendering (that is, you don't work on it at all, just send it stuff to render.)

My current set up is economical, with refurb older machines - in order of decreasing render speed, they are dual Xeon E5-2690 v0 as workstation, dual Xeon 2660 node, dual Xeon 5650 node, and my old workstation, an i7 3930K.
Thanks, Tom!
Is it complicated to install a system like that at home? Is that even possible with Cinema 4D and the Corona Alpha?

13
Thank you guys so much for your answers. Really helps me out!

@cecofuli: Yeah, I was wondering about the price, too, since the Ryzen technology is supposed to be so much cheaper.
I need it rather quick. I should've started getting into this two years ago.
Btw: What is a node?

@Jann: That's exactly why I'm hesitant to buy into this "new" technology. I'll check out some configurations with the CPU you mentioned.

Can you guys tell me what systems you're using?

Thank you, Thomas.
I studied the Corona benchmark and even compared some CPUs to one another but I'm still not sure what the best solution is for me. :-/

Dear all!

I've been following the forum for quite some time now, but never posted anything. Until today. :-)

The reason beeing is that I need a new PC/workstation. My background: I'm a graduated Architect who worked as a CG artist for the last two years mainly for one smaller company. So I did everything on my college PC up to this point. Now I want to continue on a freelance basis and therefor I need a new rig. I've been reading threads and articles for days now, but can't really find the right solution for me. That's why I'm asking you for help. I'm trying to give you as much information as possible.

As I said, I'm an Architect and have zero to none expertise in computer science. I use ArchiCAD, Cinema 4D and - obviously - Corona for my renders. Render times on my current machine are brutal as is working on bigger scenes. So I thought I would buy a new PC with an awesome CPU and a decent GPU (GTX 1080) and would be ready to go. But it seems to be quite more challenging than I expected.

I'm planning on using the rig for other things as well, like video and photo editing, and a bunch of other Adobe stuff. I even consider using GPU-based renderes and maybe even Unreal Engine in the future, too. That's why I wanted to go with a gaming PC (although I'm not a big PC-gamer). But then I read a lot of posts from you guys about work stations. Up to this point I'm not even sure if I know what exactly a work station is in comparison to a normal PC. All I read is, that you can build a decent station with a lot of horse power for less money.

Speaking of money: I would spend around 2.000 - 2.500 €. I've also been advised to wait for the new Ryzen chips from AMD. One (german) shop even builds a rig with the new 1800X: https://www.alternate.de/html/product/1336397

Sorry for posting so much, but I wanted to give you guys a better understanding of what I need (or at least think I need?)
