Hardware / Workstation configuration
« on: 2019-06-21, 18:15:18 »
Hi,

I'm configuring a new workstation for myself and I would love to hear your opinions on the subject.
I'll be mostly running Cinema 4D + Corona.
I mostly work on archiz - houses or small residential projects with realistic 3D foliage.
My upper budget is 1800€ for the whole package (1gb ssd, 64GB rama,... LCD excluded of course)

I'm going to use it as a main computer, not a slave. So I'm expecting decent viewport speeds.
Since CPU represents the bottleneck for Cinema viewport performance my first thought was i9 9900K.

But now I started thinking about Threadripper 2920x.
Based on cinebench scores (https://www.guru3d.com/articles-pages/amd-ryzen-threadripper-2920x-review,10.html) 2920x is 27% faster in multithreading compared to i9 9900K.
On the other hand i9 9900K is 22% faster in single thread rendering - how would that difference be reflected in the viewport speeds?

The other thing that confuses me are the Corona benchmark results - results of i9 9900K and 2920x are very similar. How come there is no noticeable difference in Corona speeds between the two? Should I trust Corona benchmark results or Cinebench results?

Any advice regarding graphic card much appreciated as well.
At the moment I have my eye on GeForce GTX 1660 Ti . Should I go with something cheaper since I'm working with CPU based Corona only?
Will it at all affect any viewport speed improvements when working with a lot of scattered geometry (grass,trees,...)

Thanks,
matej

Thanks houska! Copying the plugins folder did the job, now it's working.
Have to be really careful with all the plugins and materials that refer to plugins in order to work.

Indeed, there's no plugins folder in "<Maxon<Team render Client" folder.
When I install Corona I don't get an option to install it for Team render Client. How to fix this?

Hi houska. Hmm... but I did.
Just to be sure I've installed it again but I get the same error.

I'm using Team render client on my slave pc. Is there a special way I need to install corona?

tnx

[C4D] General Discussion / Team render

Hello,

I am trying out the Team render for the first time. I've managed to setup the machines and they seem to communicate between each other.
I've also installed the Corona Licensing server and I've entered the pass and username but somehow I still get an error on the slave computer saying "Several plugins used in this project are missing. Corona"

Can someone point me in the right direction?
thank you

@niedzviad: check the AutoSave option in Corona Preferences ... It works fine, you just need to pick the files from this folder manually: C:\Users\Usernamme\AppData\Roaming\MAXON\Cinema 4D \corona\autosave

I think it's on the ToDo list for the upcoming versions to have the option in the Save dialog box, if I'm not mistaken?

Sorry, for not replying for so long.
That's exactly what I was referring to @nkilar.
I agree, this kind of attention to materials is needed only for closeups imo. In wider archviz shots I wouldn't go as deep.
What I found very useful though is using fresnel maps for both, IOR and Glosiness slots. With GGX you get pretty close to results from the posted tutorial from Grant Warwick. But the material stays very simple to modify as well. Which I think is essential.

I'm not acquainted with "tail falloff" in 3dsmax. But I use frensel in a filter which I can control with a curve. It works great.

Hey!

I think there was once a topic regarding the GGX materials in Corona. (
)
Do we still need to merge multiple glossiness maps in one material, to achieve high realism in metal materials?
Or does Corona do it automatically and there is no use of using that workflow?

I think Corona does it, but I wanted to be completely sure.
Thanks
cheers

I was rendering 4k.
Multipass: 9lights, reflection map only.
File size: 170MB
No scattering.
Using 1 cinema xref object.

Last corona update + Cinema R19

[C4D] Resolved Bugs / Corona stops rendering, no crash

Hi there,

I've tried to render the final render over night. The render automatically stopped after 2-3hours. There was no limit set (time, neither passes).
Cinema didn't crash. It just stopped rendering.

Somebody else having same issues?

thanks

[C4D] Resolved Bugs / Re: Very long "Preparing scene data"
« on: 2018-03-03, 10:44:39 »
I've done some test regarding the "Corona Bitmap" texture slot.
And I haven't noticed any drastic time improvements.
I've also tried saving files in TIF and PNG. I've reduced image sizes.
Nothing really helps, I still get 15second of "Preparing scene data" which is IMO too long.
When I delete all the textures it's 1 second or so.

Thank you both!
I guess there is an issue with the size of the texture. I have a texture of about 130MB in size. When I delete this texture I get way faster prep phase.
Are you guys usually using JPG or TIFF for textures maps? Does it influence speed?

thank you

Now I've tried to delete all the materials from the scene and the prep time fell to about 1s.
Did anybody else had similar issues?

But If I simply try to override it with a white material it still doesn't work. I have to phisicaly delete each and every material from my scene.
Any idea how to find the error?

Thank you
