[Max] I need help! / Re: Dirt and scratches
« on: 2014-11-21, 22:00:14 »
when I say dirt I am talking about Vray Dirt effect where edges and crevices can be distressed... aged.

A perfect example is a mountain bike.... mud on the wheels... dirt and scratches on the bike frame.
You are probably referring to ambient occlusion. In Corona you can find it as a CoronaAO map that you can plug wherever you want.

It's ok to use the one on the top right, but on the forum's homepage. :)

Feel free to experiment with Corona. It is one of the most intuitive renderers out there and if you screw some settings you can always revert to defaults. Nothing bad will happen if you let your image render for too long or too short. :)

Hint: type "align hdr" in the search box without quotation marks. Come on, this is basic googling skills. :)

Black Sun, I think you should be more specific. What do you mean by "dirt"? To what kind of material do you want to add this dirt (clay, glass, metal)? Do you want this dirt to affect reflectivity, glossiness, bump, or just diffuse colour? Do you want it to be procedural or a bitmap?

[Max] I need help! / Re: Displacement Maps
« on: 2014-11-21, 19:21:16 »

Already tried that Maru... put displacement to 1% and it still spikes. Am I doing something wrong?

Where did you change that value? I don't remember any percentage-driven setting for displacement. What version are you using?

You can stop rendering when you think your image looks ok (for example when there is no visible noise or no aliased edges). There is no formula for this. Rendering time depends on the kind of scene you are rendering. You can also set Corona to stop rendering after a given number of passes or after given time (progressive renderer tab). Usually after some time the image will not change at all after each new pass - then you can consider rendering finished and stop it.

Use min/max displacement level in material's settings. Hope it helps. :)

If you want your final effect to look like this https://forum.corona-renderer.com/index.php?action=dlattach;topic=5967.0;attach=24227;image then you should use a different map for displacement. The one you are using in your pictures from Corona has no transition between black and white so the edges are rough . Your Vray rendering (the one I linked above) has displacement with less steep edges. It would require additional blurring. You can achieve this procedurally by using gradient ramp map. Maybe Vray uses filtering/blurring for displacement maps automatically? Or am I missing something?

Maybe it's just bad mapping? Are these textures hi-res? Using that lazy uvw script might help.

Hmm. Daily build Oct 14 2014 here. Here is my ies light. Did you try with a different ies file?

Is it visible when you are looking at the light perpendicularly? Maybe it's related with this: https://forum.corona-renderer.com/index.php/topic,2674.msg19710.html#msg19710

Hmm... then apart from changing leaves material you can edit the hdr and remove/soften the sun and use it as reflection override. But that's only if you are ok with such faking. Otherwise I think it's an effect that happens in real life if leaves are so reflective.

Just remember that MSI does not affect only caustics but also GI. It cuts off intensity of light being bounced off of objects. The conclusion coming from this thread is that it's not a good idea to hit F9 and then significantly change exposure value. It's best if you set your desired exposure value first, and then render image.
