No difference in terms of performance, but there might be some slight difference in scatter preview options in case you're using proxies.

The purpose of proxy is to have better viewport performance than if using full geometry.
Faster rendering/lower RAM usage when using proxies is a common misconception.

hi, you are saying that proxy doesn't use less ram.  I created scene - 10 teapots (not instances) with about 520kpolys each one, converted them into 10 different cproxy.
What i've got:
geometry - 5gb ram while rendering fom cmdline
proxy - 3gb ram while rendering fom cmdline
Corona settings by default.
scene - https://yadi.sk/d/V4GqQY4t3Tyam3 - max 2014
video -
In exteriors i use from 20 to 50 proxies, and i noticed, when i use geometry instead, it uses more ram, and render stars much more slowly.
what i'm missing?

Not really sure. Maybe Corona is smart enough to treat identical proxies as instances?
