[Max] Daily Builds / Displacement behaviour Phoenix map
« on: 2021-04-26, 21:37:03 »
Hi there,
!HELP!
I have a catastrophic problem, somehow the behavior of the Phoenix FD ocean map is completely different, the displacement height seems capped. In Vector mode or non vector mode.
See attached, same map, same settings. Right is rendered with corona 6 and left is the new one(30th march daily). I'm kind of screwed because literally in all my scenes I am using Phoenix Ocean map and now all my old scenes are different. I asked a friend with Corona 5 to render this and it looked ok. Is there anyway i can revert to Corona 6 behavior? This is very important

It is impossible to create a stormy sea, I cannot raise the waves no matter what I do. Has something changed fundamentally in the way Corona calculates displacement?

Desperate level 10/10

!HELP!

Bringing this back from the dead...

Is there anyway to partially extend the displacement calculation? I have a huge body of water so I don't need all of it displaced, but camera only is not enough either. I'd need some extra 20-30%. Is there a way to control this?

Thanks!

[Max] Feature Requests / Send to Photoshop
« on: 2021-03-24, 07:17:06 »
Hi there all!

I was wondering if it is difficult or even possible to make a button in the Corona VFB and Corona Image editor which will send all or the selected element to photoshop.

So click "send to photoshop" and if Photoshop is open, it should load the images there. I know there is CTRL+C~CTRL+V and load files into stack script in PS, but this way it would be much faster.

Thanks!

...... Absolutely amazing. Can you give a bit more insight of how you did the leaves? Thanks

5950X would be a very good choice for your budget.

Do not buy a 10 year old GPU. You need that for fluent viewport and for overall system stability, and I mean the VRAM. DO NOT get a card with under 6GB of VRAM because you will ran into black screen and other issues. If you are not in a hurry wait for RTX 3060.

36
How do you feel about VrayGPU compared to Corona? I briefly tried it...

At this point Corona is so straightforward that Vray feels very weird to me, even though I love the features of it (Crazy good framebuffer for example).

But yea, absolutely bring on CoronaGPU :- ). It's time for heresy!

(Although, one aspect I don't welcome :- D The damn heat... my 3990X is mini-sauna, and that's just 280W (often 270W only). RTX 3090 has continous draw of 380W lol. Imagine 3990X + NV-Linked 2x3090X = 1040W of heat alone! I guess I would have to make water-loop and put the radiator outside of window because that is half of my air-conditioning power).

Hi there,
I have only tried it on exterior scenes, so shiny yachts on water with something like 10-12 million plus particles for the foam and it feels quite fast. But as you said, the converter does a shit job and I have my brain wired for Corona :)) There are not that many settings to mess with in it anyway. I cannot say that much at the moment because I am limited by my GPU-s VRAM, I had to strip the scenes a lot. I really wanted to get a 3090 RTX but yeah...go figure.. no chance at all. Damn bots and scalpers.

Also Vray GPU feels a bit buggy and not very trustworthy so to say, like a lot of the stuff is still not supported and you literally have to have the "supported checklist" in front of you. At one point I felt like that VW 32 Golf concept Jeremy Clarkson was driving which had almost no buttons and dials linked to anything. Same here, you change some stuff nothing happens then you realize it is not supported.

I don't know how it handles complex GI, I only need like 5-6 bounces for my scenes.

I may not have a 3990WX but, the heat...well..I have my appartment facing south, 11th floor (last one) and the 3950X runs hot. AC is working 24/24. I don't even want to know what 3090 RTX will do. I might disconnect my central heating, I guess I won't be using it during the winter IF I can get my hands on one of those cards by then.

However I keep an eye on Intel's Xe graphics and have high hopes on Raja Koduri. Check this out
feature=youtu.be&t=2740   ( https://forum.corona-renderer.com/index.php?topic=25571.msg153082#msg153082

The bottom line is for interiors I will not switch from Corona to anything else, but for animations I might need to go with Vray GPU and 3090 RTX's

@romullus -> I only tested what I have specified above, using the latest Vray GPU 5 hotfix 2. The way I did it is by setting up a time limit on my very simple scenes and eyeballing the noise. I don't see any other way, at least now of comparing these. At least in Vray there is consistency between CPU and GPU results, of course using only supported features

First of all, I really really like Corona and the Corona team which has always been of support when I had a problem with the scene, a bug etc. so thanks for that

However, with the new 3000 series it's the first time when I EVER look into GPU rendering-> Vray GPU and Redshift.

Before spending 1500EUR on a GPU I thought to do some tests with the environment I typically use, large oceans, foam and boats.

The results were that on Vray GPU, a puny 1060 GTX(what I currently have) is slightly, just slightly slower than a 3950X Ryzen (Both Vray CPU and Corona) so price/perf imagine what a 3080 RTX (similar to 3950x) would do.

I have 2 huge problems with Corona, it renders big refraction planes unbelievably slow, as i posted previously it doubles the render times and the unending lights fireflies, as on yachts everything is reflective (ceilings, walls, floors, railings, glass, pools etc etc). If you add small led lights near these surfaces (ie steps lighting) I am screwed. I have to wait for about 3h-4h for the render to clean, on a scene where there is very little GI bouncing. GPU renders seem to perform much better in situations like these.

Now, Vray GPU is buggy and unstable as hell, Redshift isn't, it is much much more mature.

However Corona just feels more polished and the feeling that it just bloody gives the results you are expecting with little effort is gold.

My bottom line is........

Corona GPU please

I imagine there is a lot, a lot of work but reading on the Vray forums I will quote one guy working at some CGI studio ".Nevertheless, adding some cards, specially the new 30 serie, the speed increase may be enough to convince us to gradually abandon Corona and adopt the GPU way (with the lack of features and stability, I know)."

So... Please

Corona GPU I'm sure it will the best GPU renderer out there because you guys don't mess about when doing things.

Thanks!

Hey, no help from me just wanted to say I love the result so far :- ). Do you have WIP thread? I have older personal project where I planned to make same stuff with yacht&foam, though not animation, just stills.
I would love to consult with someone eventually who already passed some pain of the process :- ).

Hi there& thanks.

I don't have a WIP thread, but you can PM me any questions you have. Pain is a good word for the tests l did lol :)) I think and I can point out some key things which are essential to get right (engine cooling outlet, anchor pocket interaction, propellers etc) so the process will be smoothened a bit.

Yep, for multiple angles and camera positions a realistic solution is the best. I didn't realize it you need this for lots of camera positions even though you said you use a lot of renders with sea water.

There's also Dreamscape from Sitnisati which is a pretty good looking ocean solution (as long as you don't use tall waves) complete with waves and surface shader and I guess pretty fast or optimized, but probably doesn't work with Corona.

Yeah..and I need animations as well..I don't know what to do man. If I render the ships separately I don't have the foam reflection in the hull and I don't have the waves and water reflection in the hull. Rendering the water separately means no reflection of the ship in the water and no shadow of the ship on the water (well, shadow would be the only thing easy to fix). Also the foam simply doesn't look good if I render it separate. So it kind of has to be in one go. Imagine... Pressing that refraction ON button is  pretty much reducing my 16 core machine to a 8 core one speed wise. Denoiser is not an option, becuase they generate incredible amount of splotchiness(like good old school low Irradiance map settings).
I'm still looking for solutions and dreaming of a custom ocean shader from Corona :D..but I'm a minority here

The difference between the two pictures are quite subtle. Can't you fake it somehow with some fog color or translucency or something ?
Hi,

I have tried that and it is very unreliable (different angles have totally different results) using translucency method. Also the "transparency" using translucency doesn't work properly,it's too murky if I get closer with the camera. It's very very frustrating since I deal with this on a daily basis...

I'm probably in a huge minority here but a nice optimized for ocean shader would be nice... As in one of my posts here on the forum, using refraction on huge areas of water simply doubles the render time in most scenarios :(

Thanks!

I haven't opened the scene but maybe you've put the camera inside the walls without noticing? Try to move the camera forward and see if that fixes your problem. Alternative, you can use camera clipping for situations like these.

Hi Maru,

Indeed, I have a max depth ray of 5, MSI to 5 as well. There is something with huge refractive areas that simply doesn't go well with Corona. I did hide the foam and the difference is insane as well.... I know I asked this before, I have absolutely no knowledge of programming, but can a custom ocean shader be done for corona, by a 3rd party for example?  Or that is not possible? I am asking this because literally 99% of my renders include ocean and waves...

Thanks!

[Max] I need help! / Refraction doubles render time
« on: 2020-08-28, 15:42:19 »
Hi there,

I need to get to the bottom of this and any suggestion of faking this or any posibility to speed this up would greatly improve my renderings (and my mental state).

Please see the attached 2 renders. One has refraction set to zero = Render time 03:39
One has refraction set to 1, no scattering = Render time 07:17

So you see my frustration and desperation...I need to render animation out of this but refraction completely destroys my render times. This is on a 3950X CPU.
If I use translucency the render times are similar to the NO refraction ones, but at this angle the water looks like plastic :(

Is there anything at all I can do? Any tricks to fake the look and feel? I could get the color in order in post, but look at the back part of the ship, no underwater foam is visible of course. And at lower angles I need some transparenct near the ship. Can this be made adaptive in anyway?

I tried to map a gradient around the ship and make the water near the ship refractive and the rest non refractive but oh boy the render times are like 12311x higher:))

Any suggestion would be welcomed. To me 2x render times for refraction seems very excessive.

Thanks!

Hi there,

!!Big thanks to the Corona team for fixing this so quickly!!  I didn't encounter any issues in my scene anymore.
Damn I should've sent this sooner..I wasted hours if not days looking into every single material, looking for empty objects, node tracks all kind of sh*t. Ow well, I'm so glad it is fixed now!

Thanks again
