Title: Color scheme map plugin
Post by: srikken on 2016-11-23, 11:32:40
Hi everybody,

I work for a company that uses multiple color scheme's for products, like the RAL Palette.
Sigerstudio used to have a free RAL Color plugin for 3DS Max, witch I still use a lot, where you have a map for in the diffuse slot where you can choose witch color you want and it uses that RGB Code, see attachment.

Now is my question: does somebody know a way to create something like that, on your own, but with different color schemes?

:)

What about just using material libraries? And that RAL color Plugin - is it sill available? I could not find it.

Also interesting: http://www.daveandgoliath.com/paint-pot-3dsmax-database-of-paint-codes/ not user extendable though (and I could not get it run properly here with max2016 for some reason)

Good Luck

That RAL plugin looks quite useful.

Mm the thing with material library's is that if your need to change 1 value you're fucked... especially when you have 100+ color options

The paint plugin looks interesting, will look into that, but for what I see now you can't put in your own colors.

And for the RAL Plugin, you can't download it anymore. But I have it attached :)
''Extract the downloaded archive RAL_ColorSolid.zip to maxroot\scripts\startup\
Restart 3ds Max and now the new texture map plugin RAL Color Solid is available.''

IF YOU ARE THE RIGHTFUL OWNER OF THE RAL_COLORSOLID PLUGIN AND YOU DON'T WANT YOUR PLUGIN TO BE DOWNLOADABLE, PLEAS SAY SO. I WILL PUT IT OFFLINE.

What do you mean exactly here? Pull from matlib, change item, delete old item, put to matlib should do it? But yes, it´s more comfortable to do such things by editing some xml :)

Ah, thx. I´m just curious which rgb values are used there in comparison.

Good Luck

You don't even have to delete old item in material library, just drag new item exactly on the old one and it will repalce it. Just don't forget to save mat library after that.

BTW, why to save colours as materials instead of maps (CoronaColor)?

New RAL Color plugin will be available soon. In progress new version ported to C++ and fixed some colors.

Ah, very good, never noticed that.

For the above RAL matlib, it´s simple: I just converted some existing (and I´m not fully satisfied with it when comparing to our samples). Furthermore there are sometimes special "colors" which act more as a material, e.g. DB 702, 703 or some RAL colors which are a kind of glittering paint.

New RAL Color plugin will be available soon.

Well that´s interesting, thanks for the info.

Good Luck

custom texturemap 'plugin' is absolutely possible using just maxscript
example (http://docs.autodesk.com/3DSMAX/16/ENU/MAXScript-Help/index.html?url=files/GUID-26D082D6-B086-48A2-A642-1137AEA145BD.htm,topicNumber=d30e106640)

You seriously think that I don't know it? :) But I don't think that is worth to discuss +/- maxscript and C ++

No, siger. That was the question I answered.

Tnx for your answers

Super! looking forward to it

Didn't know that, tnx! More practical than making a material for every color. Especially when you have materials with the same colors but differed values :)

I think it's more convenient to use texmap plugin instead of material or color library. For example, RAL Design contains 1625 colorshades, RAL Classic - 213 colornames...

Depends. A texmap plugin has at least to be installed (on all nodes/farm). When you just need some RGB values for another texmaps slot, a material library should be enough (and if icons are disabled, they are also quite fast). And a plugin is usually not extendable by the user. But maybe all this color scheme stuff will be done by CoronaColorpicker in the future :)

Good Luck

Hi Siger,
any news on new RAL plugin?

I just installed old RalColorSolid on 3ds max 2022 (both .mse file and .png logo in startup folder) and get this error all the time when I use it. "Runtime error: .NET runtime exception: ...\RALColorSolid.png"
How can I solve it?

Thanks in advance.

@Siger

..may I ask you, will be RAL colors translated to real world values? (LRV corrected- like dubcat does here: forum.corona-renderer.com/index.php?topic=13398.msg124782#msg124782 ), will be new library "ready to use" ?

for example, as srikken shows- RAL 9010/ pure white.   LRV~84 (e-paint values)

original values:  240/237/225 (sRGB)
LRV corrected values:  236/233/221 (sRGB)
in this particular example the difference is not too big, but often its not so...

Thanks in advance!
