Hello, Arsalviz,

that's a really nice atmosphere. Also your other pictures on your Instagram page let the pale desire for exposed concrete in my own walls sprout again. (too late ...)

Since I am looking for good dining chairs for an apartment and many of them are just too boring or "overdone", would you be so kind to tell me which leather chairs you sow in your visualizations?

Thanks a lot and once again a compliment!

Thanks for your tips and detailed Ideas.

I updated all the drivers, bios, AMD energy preset etc. right at the beginning and used the driver verifier, but that didn´t fix the problem.
All those classics as memtest, prime etc. didn´t show any errors, but I will try to test ram by ram chip in single steps.
The hint with the GPU, if it fits well, could be an option because this is something I haven´t tried.

It is crazy, that the BSOD are always different. "unexpected kernel mode trap", "IRQL_not_less_or_equal","memory management" etc.

Sometimes I think it is a ticking time bomb under the hood. I think it might be the ram, because there had been reportings of new but damaged G.Skill chips I am just wondering, that memtest didn´t complain anything at all.

I had some "seldom" moments the PSU made some crackling noise (not always when it is under heavy usage and 100%CPU workload) is this normal, my other PC had been very silent and the new system, (CPU fan as well) is quite noisy.

But I know it is by far too general for a remote diagnosis, so I apologize for my long post because I think I need to ask the reseller to recheck the whole system. There are too many sources for errors.

But thanks for your kind posts!

Hardware / fault-prone Threadripper System
« on: 2018-07-16, 09:32:18 »
Hi good morning,

I have a question which engages me quite a few weeks. I have bought a Threadripper 1950x System last year an it works ok, not that stunning as I was hoping and how it could have boosted renderings.
I am not sure, but it ist not 100% the render time which gets on my nerves, but more the 3ds Max lethargy. I have an ASrock Taichi Mainboard and 64GB G.Skill Flare X 2400 (too slow?) RAM and SSD (crucial 750GB mx200) + Hitachi 4TB.  The PSU is a 700W Cougar VTX. + Nvidia 1060 6gb card. +NH U14S TR4-SP3.

Not that seldom (1-3/month) I get BSOD which definitely sucks. (I tried 24h Prime and checked Ram etc.)

I use it for hobby rendering with the pleasure of a nice picture or visualizing an Idea for myself.

What do you guys think might help or would you recommend to do as another step or if I should send the whole system back to the reseller, who built it. (Mindfactory)

Another question is, would you think a 32 core TR could speed up 3ds Max as well. I have read, the usage of all cores (XFR?) might be better or do you think the PSU would be overstrained?

Thanks for all Ideas, but right now it doesn´t make that much fun to use this (loud and buggy) system.

Best regards

Fritz

Very nice and great atmosphere and not such a cluttered megascan mess. And the fox is a really nice idea.

Hi there, of course I like the cat very much, but I thought it isn´t possible to mix the fur color?! How did you make it that tabby?

@Daskydesign

Hi, concerning your ram, I would think about the need for higher clocking. There had been discussions, about the benefit for rendering.
If you want to play games as well, take the (clock)speed. For rendering, I am just not convinced right now. I preferred for my (nearly the same system) more Ram.
It looks like the demand will rise. 64Gb shouldn´t be a wrong investment, but take definitely the 16Gb sticks.
Just for your cooler, the Freezer 240 was also my favorite, because of the lag of coolers. But I decided to take the Noctua NH-U14S TR4-SP3 Tower.
The reseller recommended Noctua compared to the freezer and the linked Review confirms this theory. In the Review the Nocua capped the expensive Thermaltake Floe Riing RGB 360.

@Christa Noel

after looking a few compatibility lists of Mainboards for Threadripper, they looked way more liberal relating the Ram.

kind regards

Patience is a fine trait.

We all should look forward and imagine new interesting constellations. If we really could switch licenses, if I understood right, there could be the chance to test out e.g. Vray for Unreal Engine.
Maybe there would be a crossover and the corona scene works with Vray for Unreal as well. With the opportunity to have a straight transferpipeline with Epic´s tool Datasmith many older dreams could become true. It reminds me to the days when fiddeling around with the Duke Nukem 3D editor, but with stunning visual appearance.

Last week I met a woman, always talkin about beeing "open minded" until my gorge was rising, but this is what many people should be, a little bit more "open minded"!
It is more about interesting stuff to come in future, instead of just e.g. caustics etc.

What with the pricing and licensing policy? Will be some serious changes? We’d like to stay at normal price as usual.

Pricing will stay the same.

This is what I meant with "answered/commented".
Shouldn´t be confound with acquisition in terms of "buy-out", but maybe I´m slow on the uptake and don´t get the clue. But my question either way was answered.

It might be okay if RL thinks it is indispensable these days, but hey, we all know at the end it is all about the money

If we were really after money, both I and vlado would be working for google or facebook, making more people click on ads. Rendering is not really lucrative business; render farms make probably more money on Corona than we do. We enjoy doing what we do, and that is why we survived in this business - over the years we have seen other renderers trying to do the cash grab that came and went. Corona wouldnt be successful if i was not willing to invest my last student money into it to keep it free as long as possible. It was not about the money back then, and it is not now ;).

Then I am sorry, that you got me wrong. When I wrote, it is all about the money, it means,( as it was a little circumscribed in my prior text), that you just want to survive in your business, as it is everywhere. Not to become rich and grease.
I am no CG-artist, and sorry for beeing more an interested amateur with another background. But in my and every other business it would be 1:1 the same.
To your former question:

Do you mean the price of product or price of acquisition?
Of course I meant the 1st one, the 2nd doesn´t have to interest me.
I just have seen too late, that this question was later commented under your blog post, sorry. But thanks for taking your time for answering. I generally didn´t want to make my post look harsh in any kind ...

I might be wrong, but for now, this one might help you in the lite version as well.

Hope this helps.

The people all over the world (wide web) love David and Goliath comparisons. But this one doesn´t really fit.

What I always recognized and actually found sympathetic over the years, was the respectful intercourse with Chaosgroup and vice versa.
If people weeped because of Vray peeves, Ondra "and his crew" never found a discrediting word. It was some kind of coexistence at eye level.

There are many new chances and the idea of beeing able to use a vray model directly without the need of balancing gloss, bump etc. is nice.
A few years ago vray was a newcomer and the holy grail. Even today I wouldn´t compare them with Autodesk or Adobe. But if you want to do so, chaosgroup are more a garagestore combined with those players.
Has anybody ever thought, that Renderlegion just didn´t earn enough money. With me, they earned a few bucks for a very kind student´s license for playing around and just experementing a little bit. That is just a drop in a bucket. But worse are those, who are not even willing to invest anything, just trusting in piracy. I believe "our guys" have been just too nice! Professionals in R&D but not in financial questions.
I know there are coexistences, Porsche wanted to swollow Volkswagen, but as time told us, VW gulped Porsche, both are on the market, more than before! But if RL isn´t careful or blue eyed, they will end like Lancia, being a quirky mascot on the siding.

But all people here should learn, because they can´t change it anyway " in dubio pro reo!" give them time before you roll out the shitstorm. btw.Fstorm wants to earn money as well and their
(or his) alphaphase was much much shorter.

The only thing I don´t like is the way, how RL /Vlado encircle the price tag question. It is affronting their customers intelligence. By overemphasising, corona will be continued, they spare out the 2nd common question.  "We have decided not to disclose transaction details.Let’s not make it all about the money. "
It might be okay if RL thinks it is indispensable these days, but hey, we all know at the end it is all about the money, and this is where "friendship" usually ends.

But guys, it isn´t worth forming a riotous mob :-)

@ romullus

You are right it can hardly be compared, many displacement maps had been or are absoluteley wrong. They just converted maps from color to bw but the newer shaders got some extra love.
Stone walls e.g. had been based on good photos but the displacement was a joke and combined with alot of work to fix them, but the mentioned and linked shader works well.

Relating to the reflection slot with strength 1/ white as the classic PBR-procedure, I think, (I might be wrong) using maybe >80% white and 20% or less of a reflection map which can be different to the glossines map gives some interesting variation in shimmer. But thats is just my perception it can be some kind of placebo.  Would just be interesting, if anybody can confim this assumption.

Thanks, you are all right, I think the step from 1070€ to 1700€ is not that large + the dual CPU Mainboard. But I catch myself by delaying the purchase since Ryzen came around.
I really hate all those embarrassing gaming-boards and don´t want to be in the gaming enthusiast´s sector, but all local resellers of serversystems just have completely no informations about prices and release dates. They all say:" We can tell you anything about Xeon and Threadrippers, but Epyc, sorry!"
I fear it might have been cool, but epyc comes too late for me. I think I will search for a completely opaque tower chassis to avoid the risk of epylpsy and ignore the nice but unused quad-sly compatibility, they are all offering :-)
