i would like to know if you reduced the intensity of the sun(to something like 0.05) to work with the hdri or you just played with the exposure controls to give the desired results....either way, which would be the most realistic approach? and would it work the same in exterior scenes as well?

Im always adjusting sun`s size / intensity. Pairing HDR with sun is what i use lately. It needs some time to develop your own "presets". Experiment and do what you like. Important are pixels in final image.

How many passes you usually render at? Also, which resolution?

Every image (final) is rendered at 5000px. And i dont know how much passes, really. Im using 5x6core xeon renderfarm so 5k images are clean after 1-2 hours.

Thanks guys. Lightning is pretty simple. Just HDR mixed with Sun.

These 2 images were lit just with HDR.

Have you got any additional hidden black/white planes to cast/block shadows and light in preferred directions here?
I do like your approach to lighting.

Which HDRI are you using please? Some of the are so hit and miss with producing good results!

Some guys should put that question into their signature - "Which HDRI you had used?". That'd save a lot of typing ;]
