I don't know if things changed, if I remember correctly Max didn't like non Nvidia cards in the past. I'm not using iray.
Thanks in advance!

I wouldn't risk it, AMD has a long history of shitty drivers. Also, from my experience, AMD GPUs that have more or less same performance as their nVidia counterparts in games have usually worse performance in 3ds Max for some reason. If you have exactly the money to afford RX 470 then get the best nVidia GPU that money can buy ;)

Yup, it's pretty much new RX 470 or used GTX 970.

I had similar decision to make recently. I saw some users on the russian forums had praise recent radeon cards as better choise for max, but what put me off, was the fact that rx470/480 draws about 5 times more power than nvidia counterparts on idle in multi monitor setup. For me that was more than enough to make my mind in favor of geforce. Never had radeon before and it looks like that won't change for few more years - ordered new card just yesterday :]

Yea, I sorta do mind, but it looks like Nvidia will be the final choice. I'm considering learning Unreal Engine, so more VRAM the better. I don't game and am perfectly happy with current GTX 650 to be honest :)

So this is true, I also saw the numbers but thought it's under some special circumstances. Well, to the ebay it is!

970 cca. 200€, 1060 cca. 300€
And I refuse to go down the "if you add just a little more you can get..." road. Been there, done that, before you know it your buying something twice as expensive then you planed on :D

In short:
Viewport wise, Max prefers DirectX, here's where nVidia GTX is best.
970 is fine (you can also play with FStorm and IRay).

Edit: EVGA Sale (US, Canada, Mexico)
