Title: denoiser incompatible...
Post by: Merlin on 2019-06-23, 19:13:21
Hi,
Intel CPU AI, which is supposedly compatible, do not have it...
an error message appears and then it crashes every time

I still use Corona 4 beta.

After this message (which is normal) Corona has never crashed on my machine.

Maybe switch back to beta and try again.

no, I'm not going to go back, I had other problems that seem solved on the V4.

Hi. Not a C4D user, but this is the same for all. Intel AI Denoiser is NOT compatible with HQ filtering yet. So switch off either AI denoiser or HQ filtering.

Hope it helps

Okay, thanks,
is it announced in the news Functionality or I've read wrong?

Not in Max, no. But can't say what's announced for C4D.

The AI denoisers (both Intel and NVIDIA) have been trained on a specific type of noise, where that noise is "one pixel wide". The new High Quality Image Filter changes the noise though and softens it across several pixels - this means the AI denoisers cannot recognize it as noise as it does not match what they have been trained on.

The info is in the release blog (https://corona-renderer.com/blog/corona-renderer-4-for-cinema-4d-released/):

"Note: Neither of the AI denoisers will work with the new filtering, so it is automatically turned off if either of those is selected. As with all things AI, the software has been “trained” on particular examples of “noisy version of the image vs. clean version of the image” and that training has been with the old, harsh type of noise. We are working with Intel to have their AI denoiser retrained to work with our High Quality Image Filtering, so hopefully that restriction will be removed in the future!"

Hey Thomas,
Thank you for the precision, the message to be missing now. :)
But how do you guess that kind of subtlety? It doesn't write anywhere, and I don t see it in the link you're giving.
A little contextual message would be of great help to everyone I think. Thank you.

And what is the best choice between the best filter or the best denoiser? If I understand that's one or the other, right?

If you visit the page and search for that text, you will find it is on there, under the information about the new filtering :) The release posts are where such valuable info is given, so always worth a read through.

As for which to use, it is up to you - we always recommend the Corona High Quality Denoiser for finals, which works great with the new high quality filtering. The AI denoisers are provided as options, for the user to decide if they want to use them (but they are not what we recommend, since the Corona Denoiser is the most accurate, uses the most information from the scene to do its job, etc. - this is why it takes longer to do the job, though). So, if for some reason speed is your primary concern rather than quality, you might want to use one of the AI denoisers - but in those cases, you will have to disable the new high quality filter.

The only good thing about a crash is it generates a bugreport.txt which says exactly what the software was doing at the time and lets developers take a look. If you get a crash, please always include the bugreport.txt. See https://help.c4d.corona-renderer.com/support/solutions/articles/12000033461-how-to-report-issues-c4d

Hi, what version of Corona are you using? This has already been reported and we think it might have been fixed by using a new version of the denoiser, which got introduced in one of the v5 dailies.

Thanks guys,
Houska: indeed the new v.5 built does not crash, thank you
TomG: thanks for the tip I will do it properly from now

Hi Merlin,
These are testing builds, not officially released

thanks Daniel.
Do you use it, is it work well?
can we return to the V4 in case of problems?

You can just reinstall an earlier version of Corona, yes (I do this all the time for the "comparison renders" in the new release videos and blogs :) )

Umm those are the ones that go out with every release and posted in the blog, on social media etc whenever a release comes out. The YT playlist has them all

Works OK so far, I have installed it only today, but release candidates are usually pretty stable versions

Do note however that we don't guarantee backwards compatibility of the scenes! So while you will be able to go back to Corona v4, your scenes created in newer version might or might not work. Worst case they will crash and you'll not be able to continue with your project. Of course, they'll work in the newer versions, but it might take some time before those are fixed. So never switch versions when working on a project and don't use daily build versions on critical projects!

Thanks Tom.
I've seen it before, but I thought there were others.
