So I always see Max tutorials using a dome lighting system and that may be implemented into C4D as well. What are the differences between the two?

Dome mapping mode for an HDRI projects the HDRI onto a dome with a specific size and location, and not a sphere at infinity. It's not dome lighting as such, it's dome projection of the HDRI map.

This lets there be a ground, that an object can "stick" to. Demo'ed and explained in
