It'd be great to have an additional option like the "renderable", "visible to camera" options which let you "render as holdout" so you could easily create scene subsets without loosing any light contribution.

you can find it by right-click on the object > object properties > general tab > rendering control.

 I did some tests with daily build 2015-09-14 and that's the question:
is it possible to do  /render to selection/   working good with  /resume from file/ option without artifacts on edge selected objects, when disabled  /clear VFB inbetween
renders/ in frame buffer,  for some kind of compositing directly in VFB. Something similar like in Vray Render/
