Hi

first of all, thanks a lot for implementing the great new Chaos sky!
my first tests are very exiting already:)

a first question comes up, the clouds cast shadows option like in v-ray, will that come? i miss that yet in the options and results seem without yet.

cheers
Stefan

no, at the moment the clouds do not cover the sun. In this test the clouds are at an altitude of 500 meters so very low but the sun is always in front and is not covered.

ok great thanks!

another question, or feature request:

- will there be an option to define parts of the sky to NOT have clouds at that places, like a masking texture slot, where all black areas p.e will exclude clouds. we often design sky bgs that way, so there is a part with moody clouds, on the sides p.e. and other parts with sunny bright blue sky areas.

atm i need to do this part in 2 layers(one no cloud, other clouds) and then do it is post, i think having this direct in 3d(also with correct sky reflections then) would be really great and keep the artistic control

cheers
Stefan

I can't imagine there would be any way to implement that, even just from "how do you apply a mask to an environmental sphere and control it".  My thought would be to use LightMix, have both skies (cloudy and not cloudy), and then mask in post.

You could even have a mask object, with a render pass to capture it in reflections, to generate a mask that would let you control sky and reflections, a fair bit of work but should get there :)

... or indeed, use volumetric clouds, which is where you have full control over the positioning of clouds in true 3D, which sacrifices the benefit of render time but does give you total control over the results.

I could imagine a spherical map (for example a noise with a big scale) as a mask.

PS
Would a seed parameter for the cloud creation make sense?

... and: in Max - if I read the forum there correctly - the clouds are visible in the viewport already, in C4D they are not - same reason as for the invisible HDRIs?

Hi Tom ! I've just seen your Youtube video and came straight after on the forum. This is indeed an amazing feature, I didn't even know that the clouds could cover the sun, I thaught it was just affecting the background and global lighting. I am very impressed how the Corona team listen his community. You're all making such a great work !

Thanks Sebastien, glad you enjoyed the video and the feature - there may be a little more done to it yet since we're still in the development phase (but only maybe, you know how it is with development), so we shall see!

" mask to an environmental sphere and control it"

hm, well to to honest i think that is not so complicated (from users point (maybe from technical point?), like a hdri image, it woudl be easy to paint such masks in psd or with other c4d plugins (like tilepro)

maybe there are other ideas to have more control where there are clouds and where not, the great developers who made this amazing clouds might have some ideas for definign areas without clouds,  i guess, for future updates:)

Can I piggyback in this thread with another question about the new cloud system? Do you think at any point there would be an option to have no horizon/ground in the sky? I notice there's a setting in the PRG Clear Sky tab to adjust the altitude that the clouds are drawn from the perspective of and if pushed far enough it looks as though there would be the possibility of rendering an above cloud view, if not for having the ground/horizon cover it up. Do you think at some point it would be possible to render an above cloud view using this tool?
