This project I did at work to get a better understanding of photogrammetry and realistic rendering.
I used Reality Capture to scan all the broccoli pieces, I did the water splash with Max liquid and added a few bubbles by poly painting them.
The steam/vapour was added in photoshop.

Looks nice, but don't you know that Corona already has tool for broccoli rendering - it's called Corona fractal :]

maybe would better to have motion blur at  frying broccoli ?

romullus  it is very slow and buggy with materials. I was asked Ondra to fix it but he is too busy for stuff like that

The bubbles on top of the water have wrong IOR, unless they are oil bubbles like when babushka is cooking some chicken soup.

You're right they have the same ior as the water they are in. Missed that one :-)

Quick question here, what IOR should the bubbles be? Are the bubbles not just a film of water with air underneath, therefore also close to 1.33?

I guess this brings me to my next question, what's the best way of approaching bubbles in 3D? Should be we shelling the bubble mesh (as opposed to a solid sphere), and what about intersections with the water mesh?
Vray who?

The "true" way of modelling bubbles would be making them intersections. Sphere inside the main water object = bubble.

The "fake" way would be adding a sphere on top of the water surface and giving it IOR like 1,01 or so (it should then look like very thin refractive surface).

I think that simplest, yet physically plausible way would be like this - set IOR to 1,0 or very close and fresnel IOR to 1,33. I didn't test that though and can't guarantee that it works :]

That should do more or less the same thing as setting refraction mode to thin, which is also a valid solution (however the bubbles should probably have _some_ thickness to their walls).

By the way, doesn't "The Broccoli Project" sound like some super secret government experiment? UFO research, propulsion engines, ai denoisers...
