I really think a more elegant solution is needed for this. The workarounds are pretty clunky currently

[C4D] General Discussion / Re: Decals can't be transparent?

Ah interesting. So a decal with clear areas (like my attached mock-up) is not possible.
Shame - all the other ways are a little more convoluted. Thanks for the replies.

[C4D] General Discussion / Decals can't be transparent?
« on: 2022-09-11, 11:56:44 »
Hi all. I am trying to make a wet streak run across 3 different floor surfaces. I thought that using decals would be a perfect solution as it would run across all 3 objects and pick up the underlying dispacement - but unfortunately I cant get the decal to be transparent. Its always opaque white even if I have refraction turned on. Thin shell and changing the base colour make no difference. Is this a bug, or a limitation, or am I just doing something wrong?

[C4D] Bug Reporting / Re: Ongoing Tonemapping problems...
« on: 2022-08-26, 10:17:07 »
Thanks for your attention Beanzvision. I'm always impressed by the interaction on this forum!

To clarify the UI quibble in point 4 of my post.... I meant that when using the post-process panel in PV, the tonemapping needs to be opened in a separate panel. This is opposite to best UI practices, where the most used common controls (exposure, whitebalace, highlight clamp) should be most easily accessible. See screengrab.

There is no problem with this in the VFB. But as mentioned previously, I can't use that due to the inability to zoom out of the image.

"may I ask why you choose the PV over the VFB?"

I'm often tweaking a 4k or 5k image and don't want to be resizing it constantly. In the corona VFB you can't zoom out to see the whole image (why!) In the Picture Viewer you can.

"As for the ''reset'' box, can you please point me to where I can find this? I seem to be missing something."
See the attached screengrab. (I can't work out how to record the screen on my PC unfortunately, and the problem doesn't seem to be there on Mac. But basically the dialogue is still there behind everything after I close the other windows)

[C4D] Bug Reporting / Ongoing Tonemapping problems...

General info: Corona 8 hotfix 1, C4D R21, Windows 10.

A commmon workflow for me is to render to the picture viewer, and while rendering is taking place, adjust the tonemapping parameters to get the desired look

It worked perfectly in V7. But since V8 there are a number of ongoing issues. Mostly effecting scenes created in previous versions:

1. When changing a a tonemapping parameter, the image in the pictureviewer doesn't update unless I zoom in or out.

2. Values typed into the fields often dont 'stick', leaving me to use the less exact 'scrubby' method.

3. The 'Reset' box triggers a pop-up 'are you sure you want to reset' dialogue. After pressing OK a duplicate of this dialogue seems to still be present behind the other open windows.

4. More of a general quibble than a bug - but it seems much less elegant to have the tonemapping settings pop-open in an additional panel. It would be preferable for it to unfold in the Post process panel.

If you show a mockup of what you want, then maybe we could work out a solution. If it's just one piece of geommerty why wouldn't a stacked displacement material work?

[C4D] Daily Builds / Re: Corona Pattern
« on: 2022-08-22, 11:55:23 »
so it remains to buy a new cinema4d where half of our plugins don't work or other render engine....and the price remains the same for old version/the last working one of corona if we don't change render engine.
Disappointment on every point :(

Seriously - R16 was released in 2014!

That's a hundred years ago in software terms.
Of course no one wants to be forced to upgrade all the time - but you can't realistically expect software that old to be a viable option in 2022.

+1. I was also wondering this recently (C4D version)

[Max] I need help! / Re: How to do this finished?
« on: 2022-08-16, 20:59:31 »
Use a layered material.
Base layer 90% metal wth some anisotrophy, brushed texture in bump and clearcoat
Second layer the same but drop the metalness down and make the colour almost black.
Blend the layers by putting a curvature shader as the mask (only concave white, add some spread and up the directionality).
Theres a screengrab attached, from C4D tho'.

I love Corona. But I see way too many problems with the Chaos licencing. Please get them to sort it out before it drives people away.

To the OP - sorry for hijacking your thread. Best to submit a ticket here I expect: https://accounts.chaos.com/service_login

Hardware / Re: Good Laptop for working with Corona
« on: 2022-08-04, 09:57:16 »
Are you working with C4D or max? If its Cinema then a macbookpro would be my choice. My old one from 2019 has 64gb RAM - but of course it costs quite a premium

Sorry, I think I wasnt clear - I'm refering to creating metal-look materials which are not real metals - for example plastic with a silver spraypaint finish.

There is no slider or float value for the metalness setting - it's either on or off. So I'm wondering what the 'correct' workflow for this in Physical. (Using the Legacy Material you could just use 6-20 in the IOR value and that worked fine - but it's not an option in the new Physical Material.)

[C4D] General Discussion / Fake metals in physical material
« on: 2022-07-15, 12:49:13 »
I've been using the Physical material more and more. But in my work (product design, packaging, and also automtive) there are a lot of non-metal metals.
Ie. metal effect plastics, silver spraypaints, foil block print etc. etc.

What is the intended workflow with these in the new metalness workflow? I find increasing the IOR value in non-metal insufficient (too dark). And the physical metal too bright.

Any thoughts?
