[Max] General Discussion / Re: Max extremely slow to close
« on: 2023-10-10, 13:29:08 »
Thanks Alex,

Silly question, BUT...

I've always been a bit afraid to use the clean anim layers... does it delete animations keyframes that I've set-up (and need for animations!?)

Never had any issues like that, no. https://help.autodesk.com/view/3DSMAX/2023/ENU/?guid=GUID-ACAD407C-B079-4DAB-9DD0-6C8DC22389EF

This animation layers mess has been going on since 2020 days or maybe earlier. We've been using Forensic for years and it helps a tonne. Just in habit of running it before every save and before any major render, clean anim layers, clean empty layers etc.

I doubt very much you have a virus. But Forensic also checks for that btw.

Yes, we are planning to release a hotfix (for Max and C4D).

Awesome news. Thanks guys!

Would the devs consider pretty clear bug fixes like this as something you can roll out into a Corona 10 hotfix? New features and tools certainly make total sense pushing into dailies, but if something's found to be a bug and doesn't conflict/require anything new from a daily/new core then it would be a huge benefit bringing it to the current version of Corona instead of having to push into dailies/full new version (which takes time to be released, tested, HF released etc.). It'll be a looong time before we're moving to Corona 11 final + HF, presumably, since C10's only just been released.

This might or might not be related but a tip anyway: double check your max settings for bitmap loading resolution. + menu, configure viewports, then check that the textures resolutions are more or less default like 1024 pixels, 2048 pixels for viewport backgrounds. If you crank these up for any reason it can seriously mess up max file loading times.

Again, shouldn't be anything related to corona but best checked anyway to rule out as your issue.

Gallery / Recent Spaces - Summer 2023 Reel
« on: 2023-08-17, 17:27:09 »
Hi folks,

We're proud to share our Summer 2023 reel with you all. 100% Corona, of course ;) Hope you enjoy it!

Thanks Maru

Personally I think the best way to address it would be getting it in a hotfix asap, moving it to experimental and letting the user choose which way they want it, but it should default to V9 behaviour.

This should be the way, surely. New scenes made in C10 could be the new way, older scenes should load in the old way. Renders shouldn't look visually different to this degree between major versions. Especially not if there's no warning popup (like was done with the "new" bloom+glare etc.) where at least you have a choice when you open a file made in C9 or older and can "upgrade" it knowing there will be differences.

[Max] I need help! / Re: Tonemapping Curve limited to 0-1 ?

Hijacking a little, but is there no way of getting tone mapping Curve control into camera override tone mapping?

proof of concept :)

This got me thinking that Corona pattern needs its own surface color map. This would allow to use mapping and textures from pattern object and blend them with texture of base object. This would be ideal for situations like this.

+1 !

[Max] I need help! / Re: ACES in depth ?
« on: 2023-04-05, 15:45:19 »
Thanks Nejc. Is there no technical way at all of retaining at least some depth when using ACES? EXRs seem to have the potential to carry enormous dynamic range, so when rendering with ACES which is now on by default you're just losing almost all of that benefit.

Bumping this.

We have discovered that using ACES destroys most of the dynamic range in EXR renders (16-bit half float or 32 float, same result). So when you load the EXR into for example PS and reduce the exposure, you don't recover any data at all. It just goes to a grey/black mush. As soon as I disable ACES and re-save the EXR I get full dynamic range again.

Is this working as intended? If so this is really problematic because being able to recover dynamic range in EXRs is super useful sometimes, for example when basically your whole render is perfect but one area is a bit blown out, you can just load in a second version of the EXR, lower the exposure a bit, and merge that bit back in.

Is there not a way to use ACES while retaining the usual amount of dynamic range?

[C4D] General Discussion / Re: Animate Simple Exposure Value
« on: 2023-03-06, 17:30:55 »
Hey Maru,

Just tried this, but it doesn't seem to keyframe the Simple Exposure parameter. Unless I'm doing something wrong?

Cheers,
