Don't forget boolean operations between different render regions.

In real photography, when you want to create directional lighting, you apply for example a grid modifier to your light source.

Something like this:

When you look this light source from the side, you will see only black, because of the modifier.

Hardware / Re: Workstation for rendering (3500€)

In animation high CPU core and memory clock is important for viewport feedback.
Also note that if you need to have shaded viewport with textures, you will need more VRAM.

I would also suggest a double monitor setup, because in animation you usually have to deal with curve editor, hierarchy editor, parameters editors... and those windows can quickly occlude your viewport.

[Max] Resolved Feature Requests / Re: Curvature Map

Don't know, but i don't think so. If Render Legion would be so affraid to hurt someone, they wouldn't release Corona in the first place. Someones profit is almost always others lost :]
This is also my point.

As much as i'd want to see Corona's curvature and warp maps implementations, i think that this senseful decision. We need things that cannot be easily replaced first. When major features will be done, maybe then time will come for less important ones.
Absolutely. More important features must have the priority.

Having said that, I hope this feature request can enter the long term roadmap.

Apparently I am really bad in searching for already discussed topics.
Thank you for your patience.

I see, this is sad. :(
Next time I will try to search more for already discussed topics.

Do you think the main reason is not to hurt boomerlabs?
With GeoMaps they are selling two products, curvature and tension, we are only talking about curvature here.
In addiction to this, their curvature has a lot o advanced features like: per frame calculation (I think we only need static), smoothing, distortion, directional influence.

I read in another discussion that the general policy is "not developing what it is already there", do you this is the reason?

67
With warp map I mean a map that can distort a texture based on another texture.

This is a way to add detail to an ambient occlusion or a curvature map (check this other feature request).

As a reference you can look at the work that John Burnett has put on github.
I know that this plugin it is free and with the source code, but I would rather have it directly in Corona because:
  • it is a plugin, meaning I have to hope that someone will update it in time when a new version of 3dsmax will came out
  • it is a plugin, meaning I have to hope that the render farm supports it
  • it is a plugin, each person on the team needs to have the same version (?)

Another take on this subject is the Transition node in Mari, but I still have to check what this node does.

I think that it would be useful to have a shader for detailing procedural masks.
What do think about this request?
Anyone sharing the need for this feature?

[Max] Resolved Feature Requests / Curvature Map

A curvature map can be used to generate procedural wear on the edges of objects.

As a reference for the workflow you can read this article by Neil Blevins and you can take a look at how the Quixel Suite 2.0 generates its masks for layering materials.

Currently you can bake the curvature into the mesh vertices or buy a plugin like GeoMaps.

Personally I don't like these solutions because:
  • you have to bake the curvature for each mesh you want to apply the shader on
  • baking the curvature needs a quite detailed mesh to work
  • baked curvature is geometry dependent, you have to re-bake when you change the mesh
  • GeoMaps is a plugin, meaning I have to hope that they will update in time when a new version of 3dsmax or Corona came out
  • GeoMaps is a plugin, meaning I have to hope that the render farm supports it
  • GeoMaps is a plugin, each person on the team needs to have the same version (?)

I think that it would be useful to have a dedicated curvature map in Corona.
What do you think about this request?
Anyone sharing the need for this feature?

It would be helpful to keep track of these numeric changes between versions.
I'm thinking about a thread in the forum that keeps track of these multiplication factors.
Something like this:

Corona version     1.1     1.2     1.3
Refl. glossiness1??
Bump1?4

I think that those issues should be fixed by the user (possibly via scripting for large scenes).
To me the Error window's job is to point out errors, fixing them is up to the user.

Having coded a few small programs myself I definitely see your point and I feel the same.
I suppose there has to be a little bit of effort and pain on both sides, developers and users.

I'm here to help by the way, let's just figure out how do you want me* to help you. :)

edit.
* not just me of course, but everyone else that want to help.

yes. So nobody will test the unstable version. But then they will expect it to become stable all by itself ;)

Don't be so negative, I don't think that all Corona users are every single day on a deadline.
With a little more testing time and a committed group of testers I'm sure we can get a stable enough release.

I think that the users who can test RC builds are only the ones that are not working with Corona on projects with deadlines.
It is quite insane to jump to a new version of the software in the middle of the process.

News / Re: Corona Renderer 1.2 released!

I am also interested in steyin's question.

I'm on 3dsmax2014 win7x64.
I have a scene (scene_01.max) created in Corona 1.1 with a sun inside.
I can open the scene, but when I select sun properties and click ok, the viewports stop working and sometimes 3dsmax freezes.

I tried a couple of things:

1.
When I merge the sun from scene_01.max in a clean file, I can get inside its properties with no issue.

2.
If I save scene_01.max on a new file (scene_01_re.max) and open this file I get a message:

Obsolete File
Obsolete data format found.
The file may have been saved with a previous release.
--Please  resave file.

When I re-save scene_01_re.max on a new file (scene_01_re_re.max) this file have no issue.

I hope this will help to find a solution.

Should I just delete and recreate the sun, or do I need to recreate the whole scene from scratch to be sure I don't have weird data inside my file?
Should I also reset corona settings?
I have a couple of materials from alpha (they have the Legacy Mode checkbox), should I recreate them from scratch?
