Title: New Material library
Post by: Studio Heisenberg on 2021-06-07, 19:19:18
Hey,

Nice to see that we finally have material library :) Two questions, why does materials load as legacy materials and not new one? Second one: In some plastic materials I have found white value of 90+ has something changed since before anything over 80 is not physically correct?

Cheers

Hello,

Question 1 was already answered here somewhere; The materials which are inside the material library are accumulated over time as some of our team members work on them continually. This process was started way back when Physical material was introduced and material library (to some extent) was already present in 3ds Max Corona plugin. It wouldn't make sense to throw away hours upon hours of work which was put into creating these materials. And finally, you can always convert them through our new built-in Legacy to Physical converter (currently per material basis, planning to introduce a batch convert)

As for question two. "Anything over 80" is a general guideline, which can be obviously broken, as it does not cover 100% of the cases. There are instances of 80+ whites in real world. But as always, if a preset makes you think it's unrealistic, feel free to tweak it! In the end, it is your project and those materials' parameters are not locked.

Thanks,
Jan

Hi Jan,

Thanks for the explanation. The problem of second question is more for new users which could take plastic material from official library and put it in the scene, and those could produce numbers of problems specially if they observe materials to learn from them it could lead to even greater problems later. Also as a new feature and implementation I still think no matter how much work it could be, the material library should be in new material core mode in order to get into official new version. Don't get me wrong and note that I really love Corona render, but as a product that we buy and that needs to separate with quality and features from others, those details are really important in order for the Corona to stand out and be competitive.

I think there is a real point to address here.

The real reason that I want a material library from the Corona team isn't simply to save me making materials myself.

It's more so that I can see how materials really should be built, in the best possible way by the devs who really know how Corona works. Partially this is to make up for the lack of Corona documentation.

Thanks for adding the libraray - it's much appreciated. But I must admit that some of the metals dont really look like best-practice versions. (Why colour in the diffuse? Shouldn't there be more nuance in the reflection colour than just using white etc.)

I'll second that. Corona creates amazing results considering how simple it is to use but there is a chronic lack of resources available as to how to properly create shaders. The best I have found is the Mograph Plus Comprehensive Introduction to Corona for Cinema 4d series. He's really good, thorough etc.

in my opinion the material library should be perfect, if it is delivered with the software, as everything in the software. You donnot mess up the rendersettings and explain that with the option to tweak everything on your own...

For years we learned, white is max. 70% white, then there should not be 90% white material in the library. These Mats sholud be perfect for using and learning. There are enough bad materials out there...

For windows users:
No change in installation process - use the classic .exe, select Custom Installation and check that Material Library is selected with the install.

For MacOS users:
First install the build .pkg, then the material library .pkg (e.g corona-7-c4d-rc2-2021-07-02-mac.pkg and then corona-7-material-library-2021-05-18.pkg)

We plan to merge corona and material library installers into one for the final release.

Thanks,
Jan
