Hi
when I create a layered material, the base material has a bump map assigned. The layer 1 material has a different bump.
I would have expected layer 1's bump to be added on top of the base materials bump, but when rendering, places where layer 1 is visible, the base material's bump is no longer there as expected.
How do I fix this? I'd prefer to not have to duplicate geometry.

This is by design. You can imagine this as having two different materials, and blending between them.
One solution here would be to forget about the base material's bump, and plug a mix of base+layer 1 bump into layer 1's bump. (CoronaMix will work fine in bump slot)

What about if I have a flat glossy semi-transparent/relfective material over a bumped surface (like water over sand, or varnish over wood). I still want to see the underlying materials bump/displacement through the top layer, so it remains physically accurate.

Then you should combine both bumps and plug the result into the coat layer.
