Title: New Frame Buffer icons
Post by: ogneed on 2014-02-20, 21:47:29
Hi there!
Some time ago. I offered to Ondra new icons for Frame Buffer.
Ondra adviced me to open thread on forum about this.
So take a look at last mockup which I made.

May I can get some feedback from community?

Sorry,

but for me the "Render History" and the "Render Region" is really missing of alpha5. And in the material editor something simillar for the "Render History" with run-down or set-back would be same good...

I prefer modern minimal, clean and "flat" design.
Avoiding rounded, context imitating icons shapes.
3dsmax icon is outdated a bit :)

Please don't. And those reflections, oh.. :)

I still say  modo's style buttons would be awesome to add.

Agreed, i don't like flat, even though it's "in" right now.

More flat version, also last version of 3ds max Icon.
As I remember, Ondra said what he like current colours of icons. So now this original blue colour from current FB.

I would like to say - here I try to do only new icons. So right now I not work with all UI and buttons issues.
But if you have any suggestions, and Ondra not against - tell me what I can do.

My suggestion would be less strong bevel effect, and also less saturated. Right now they look like they would distract you from content VFB is displaying. :)

"flat is new black" :)

Ah, new black. I need try.
For now a bit more pale blue and less bevel version.

Added couple another variant of icons with colors from Logo and With light Gray filling color.

I prefer the flat2 version.
My suggestions:
- Make the erase icon blue (Why is it red? Even the Stop icon is blue)
- Change the save and max icon to a simpler version
- Scale all icons to ~90%

Try change blue for orange, like Corona logo.

EDIT: ok, done :)

Thank all for feedback.

- Make the erase icon blue (Why is it red? Even the Stop icon is blue)
Red icon for Erasing - because this is important button. You can destroy long render. If autosave was turned off.
But we can try, and see what happen.

- Change the save and max icon to a simpler version
I've made them a bit simplier.

- Scale all icons to ~90%
Lets try

Try change blue for orańge, like Corona logo.
Already. I just updated my last message.

I like this idea:

Not distracting, simple.

How about putting some more "design" into it? :)

Some wild color variants of STOP button.

Maybe for Light UI use same color, but +2px black background.

OH GOD NO

Fresh changes:

- Smaller buttons
- All in one color

Last ones are good, but strong orange again looks very distracting.... I would stick to blue Color, as it fit's default 3ds max scheme :) Here is my idea

I vote for Rawalanche. :)

Rawalanche, seems bit dark. Not all have good eyes. Actually i see god this, but i guess some people will see this no so good.
Back to blue color. Also remade Save icon

Yeah but you have text next to each icon. Icons are just an addon. Rawalanche's icons are better because they don't distract you from actual render.

I agree.
Just checked on light UI scheme.

Update:
Added couple version with slight outline.

Do we really need any icons? Why not just the text.

Nope, icons are something that makes clicking faster.

+1
Definitely, icons is absolutely needed.
And about design, i think current one is perfectly fine, but latest proposition from ogneed, doesn't look bad either.

I like the Yellow/Oragne icons the most, it suits overaly Corona.

Best mix is the Red STOP yellow buttons and some white elements.

Good feedback. Thank you.
In closest couple days I will try few other colors. And maybe other shapes. And we will see what thinking Keymaster.

Ok, Icons! This version was the best so far:

but now I feel that it needs some tweaks. This is how the VFB looks now - after skinning, with old icons:

Now the ogneed's icons:
start/stop: OK
Save: it looks weird, i would never be able to tell it is a floppy. We need a better floppy image.
To max: I would make it look more like 3dsmax teapot. Now it has wrong proportions. But this is low-priority
Copy, refresh: OK
Erase: Now it IMHO looks like "cancel render". Maybe we can switch it for an eraser?
Stats is no longer named stats, but tools, so we need new icon for it.

Anyone up for the task? ;)

This is good news :)
I'll do changes on closest week.
Btw, i have some idea for history.
Red frame around render preview - this is means what image selected.

I am primarily a GUI Designer, so don´t be shocked because I rearranged some parts of the GUI.

- Grouped the Icons based on function; File handling, Render control and  Image viewing.
- Used the Corona "CI Colors" for the Interface. The benefit is that you can use the same Framebuffer for all different Platforms
- flipped the Tabs to the side so (if needed) there is more space to add additional tabs. There is less need to use abbreviations.
- Merged the Render & Stop to a single Button so they work more like a switch. You hit "Render" and the Button changes to "Stop"
I always found myself tying to stop the rendering process by clicking on "Render". In 3ds Max the Render-Button changes to "Cancel" while rendering.
Additionally I placed the "Render Button" away for the Window-Control-Buttons so nobody hits accidentally "Close Window" by trying to stop the rendering.
- Added a Menubar, to make it future proof, in case you add functionality that can´t be displayed as an Icons.
Icons should be always optional never mandatory.
- Added magnifying Option
- Added Render Region
- Added History Tab

I like it.
I'm just not sure about the file/edit/view menus, it's a bit like adding another 3ds max inside 3ds max. I've never seen this in any vfb before but I don't see it as an innovation.

Very nice concept.. not sure about the render button though. I think far left position would be much better and much easier/faster to access and region and refresh would be nice to the right, right next to zoom options

I like it a lot too, esp. the vertical tabs on right, which is much cleaner and easier to look at, also more logical as you can navigate more tabs there.
I have same issue as Maru, the very top line (File/Edit,etc..) is unncecessary for Framebuffer, and makes it beefy again. I would love to framebuffer be as lean as possible, features and design wise.

I like it though :- ) Finally something that moves away from the overly...ehm, Win95/Indiesoft view.

Nice design vlado i like it it's even better that i was waiting for.

Render button for me is ok it's better to be in the center for a fast decision to render.

Thanks for the appreciation.

The "Menubar" seem to provoke some animosities among some Users.
As already mentioned, sooner or later the Framebuffer is going to get a feature that can´t be translated as an Icon, nevertheless this is something that
the developers have to decide eventually - It is more a responsibility to establish usability that a personal preference.

I really looks great. I would just change the way vertical tabs labels are written, reverse them, you know bottom up. Like in blueprints:(http://penipeni.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/09/house-blueprints-free-online-3.jpg)

I like it too. It's looks cleaner and what's more important(at least for me) much more neutral.
Region render at last, cool. History would be great, with user comments.

The only thing I dont like is max's stupid snake icon.

Here my try because blue icons looks dirty for me. More flat, last one colours theme for 2017, for region render icon ready too.For the tools menu i suggest to do only icons or use abbreviation like in Eyeon Fusion bacause that menus will grow.
