[Max] Daily Builds / Adaptive enviro sampler playground!
« on: 2020-02-21, 10:15:06 »

The newest daily build of Corona Renderer (20.02.2020) features a new adaptive environment sampler, which is enabled by default. It greatly improves image quality in areas where direct environment lighting is visible and should remove the need for portals in most scenes:
- The difference is mostly visible when using an HDRI for environment lighting.
- There is also a difference when using Corona Sun+Sky, mostly in cases where the sun is not the main source of scene illumination (if strong sunlight shines into the room through a window, the improvement probably won't be that visible).
- When using a solid color for the environment lighting, there will be no difference.
Generally, this does not improve rendering scenes with Sun+Sky or solid color environment, because those are already greatly optimized.

To compare the new and old enviro sampler:

Method 1 (using two Corona versions):
1. Render your original scene using Corona Renderer 5 - https://corona-renderer.com/download - this will give you an image with the old enviro sampler
2. Install the newest daily build - https://coronarenderer.freshdesk.com/support/solutions/articles/5000570015
3. Render the same scene using this newest daily build - this will give you an image with the new enviro sampler
Do not change any render settings between the two renderings!

Update: the below Method 2 is not valid any more, because in the latest daily builds of Corona Renderer 6, portals are completely ignored by the Corona core.
Method 2 (using a single Corona version):
1. Install the newest daily build - https://coronarenderer.freshdesk.com/support/solutions/articles/5000570015
2. Open your original scene
3. Render - this will give you an image with the new enviro sampler
4. Go to the "Development / Experimental Stuff" rollout - https://coronarenderer.freshdesk.com/support/solutions/articles/12000021288
5. Under "Lights" switch "Enviro sampler" from "Adaptive sampler" to "NormalDep Compensated"
6. Render your image - this will give you an image with the old enviro sampler
Do not change any other render settings between the two renderings!

Note 1: the tests can be repeated with and without portals used in your scene.
Note 2: it makes most sense to compare renderings using the time limit - e.g. rendering the same scene with 10 minutes time limit with the old and new sampler.
Note 3: to quickly switch between two versions of Corona, or even launch two 3ds Max instances running different Corona versions at the same time, you can use this simple trick: https://coronarenderer.freshdesk.com/support/solutions/articles/12000066819

As you may have noticed, there is a new feature in Corona Renderer 6 daily builds, which lets you store masks of objects seen through glass and reflected in mirrors:
Quote
Masking render elements can be propagated through refraction/reflection. To propagate them you have to set it in the material (Corona Mtl -> advanced ->propagate masks)
https://coronarenderer.freshdesk.com/support/solutions/articles/12000066916-how-to-use-masks-with-reflection-refraction

Please share your experiments here and point out any possible issues/requests/doubts as we would love to see how exactly you are using this feature, and make sure it works as expected in Corona.
I am also attaching a very simple scene here, which can be used to try it.

[Max] Daily Builds / Caustics playground!
« on: 2019-04-23, 20:27:19 »
Today marks the day when Corona + Caustics became reality!
We hope that you are as excited as we are, and that you will share your experiments in this thread!

The daily build is available to all license holders. Info and download:
https://coronarenderer.freshdesk.com/support/solutions/articles/5000570015

The new caustics can be enabled with a checkbox in the Performance tab.

Any tests are welcome, and we are super interested in your feedback.

More about using the new caustics on the helpdesk:

Hi!

We have just added new image filtering option to Corona:
https://forum.corona-renderer.com/index.php?topic=22529.msg146930#msg146930
Daily builds info and download: https://coronarenderer.freshdesk.com/support/solutions/articles/5000570015
It is available in Render Setup > System.

We would be super grateful if you could experiment with this option in your scenes (simple tests, wip, production - anything) and share your results here. We need any feedback: image quality, rendering time, how it works with high quality denoising... anything you spot.

So far our tests confirm that it helps in situations such as:
-Fine patterns, which are mixed with noise (patterns are easier to see)
-GI noise in general
-DOF, especially when there are bright spots blurred by the DOF
-Sharp edges of bright objects
-Moire patterns

I am attaching some simple test images below.

https://coronarenderer.freshdesk.com/support/solutions/articles/12000056115
https://coronarenderer.freshdesk.com/support/solutions/articles/12000056143

NOTE: currently it cannot be used together with the AI denoisers!

We have received few reports from users having an issue with the DR server where it gets stuck and has to be restarted to continue rendering. Unfortunately we were never able to reproduce this problem and investigation based on your reports and minidumps did not lead us to the root cause of this bug yet. This makes us suspect that the issue might be related to specific hardware configuration, network setup, or 3rd party plugins and applications (however we are not saying it's not our fault!).

We have identified some other bugs which we believe may be related to this problem and we hope fixing them fixes this one as well. Some of the fixes have been already released in the recent builds, and some of them will be released in the upcoming ones.

We have also added a "Restart 3ds Max after each render" option to the DR server based on your requests. We hope this will serve as a workaround for this problem until we can identify the real cause and fix it properly.

Please let us know if you are still experiencing this "DR server needs to be restarted" issue with the "Restart 3ds Max" checkbox enabled and disabled as this will greatly help us improve distributed rendering further.

*Update: note that the new version of the DR server application is installed into C:\Program Files\Corona\DR Server\DrServer.exe while the old one was installed into C:\Program Files\Corona\DrServer.exe. Make sure you are launching the correct version of the DR server application. It must have "DrServer | 3 (Release Candidate X)" text printed in its title bar.

The newest daily build can be downloaded from https://coronarenderer.freshdesk.com/support/solutions/articles/5000570015
Feel free to share your feedback in this forum thread or through https://coronarenderer.freshdesk.com/support/tickets/new

Thank you in advance for testing and for your patience, and sorry for this inconvenience.

Update: 09.11.2018 - V3 RC5 released with yet another DR-related fix. Please try it.
