I prefer to leave it as body objects if there's no need to do some mesh modifications. It renders just fine and is much lighter in viewports.

Today in 2015, it is a favorite of Scandinavian style. it is simply progress of history.

I find those examples from 80's and 90's most unattractive, yet i'd love to be stuck in that era forever. That was a golden age.

But you may want to have control on background colour if you plan to replace background with a photo which already has a blue fog in it. OTOH there is alpha mask for that.
