[C4D] I need help! / Max to c4d - preserve materials?
« on: 2024-03-12, 17:33:31 »
Hi. It's probably been asked before - but is there a way to get a 3dsmax scene (corona materials) into Cinema4d (also with corona materials).

I dont expect a perfect material match - just to have maps linked to the right object.

FBX exports the geo fine. But with no maps in the materials. It would take me an enormous amount of time to compare files and rebuids from scratch. Please tell me theres another way :(

Hardware / Very noisy new ryzen build
« on: 2024-01-10, 09:44:42 »
I've just completed (I hope!) my first PC build.

Its a Ryzen 7950X, built one a ASUS ProArt X670E, with Noctua NH-U12A cooler, plus 4 case fans (three at the front, one at the back) in a Fractal North case.

I set the fan curves to quiet in the bios, and also tuned and set them to AI cooling in the armory crate app.

It's silent when idle. But as soon as I use use IRR or viewport rendering the fans kick in quite high and very noisy. The CPU temp is straightaway 75-80º.

Have I messed up my cooling somewhere? Or the fan setup? Or is it just a noisy build?
My co-workers are grumbling a bit :( as my previous PC was always almost silent.

Hopefully someone can give me some pointers. Thanks in advance.

Hardware / Amount RAM Needed?
« on: 2023-11-27, 21:21:42 »
Forgive my ignorance. I'm thinking of building my first PC around a 7950X. But on my local shop's part picker - it keeps limiting me to 64GB of DDR5 RAM on the motherboard.

Is there something about DDR5 RAM that is limiting it to 2 slots? Is 64GB remotely enough these days?
I always thought that Corona was somewhat RAM hungry so my old 2950X pc had 128GB of DDR4...

When copy and pasting either corona layered or corona select material between files, the linked materials are not carried over.

For instance I have a sphere with 4 alternative coloured materials set up in a corona select material. After pasting, the slots are empty and need to be manually re-added.

C4D's File>Merge works fine, but then it brings over other lights etc that you may not want from the original scene.

[C4D] Feature Requests / Stupid simple fix? CIE naming
« on: 2023-09-13, 09:52:40 »
I know its pretty trivial. But when saving from the Corona Image Editor, the un-abbreviated file format naming is difficult to scan read. And more often than you'd hope, I select the wrong one by accident.

Can we just use standard naming conventions please :)
ie just 'TIFF' instead of the unwieldy 'Tagged Image File Format'

Heres to a simple life!

[C4D] I need help! / Convert VRay Scenes to Corona
« on: 2023-09-01, 11:39:25 »
Hi All - I've hot a large scene (in c4d) using lots of VRayScene elements. Is there any way of converting these to Corona?

[C4D] General Discussion / Material ID - am I being stupid?
« on: 2023-08-11, 10:15:33 »
Hola - I constantly use Object IDs to get nice masks for post work. But occasionally Id rather use Material IDs instead for logos etc - but I can't seem to gt them to work?

I assign a material ID number in the advanced field of the material. Then make a multipass mask and assign the material id number there too. But the mask just come out black. It also doesnt appear if I make an ID pass and set it to material.

Is this a limitation of stacked materials/materials with alphas? Or am I doing something wrong.

Theres an example of what I'm trying to achieve attached. Orange base material with the alpha masked logo stacked on top.

Like it says in the title - is there a Corona to V-ray material script or plugin available anywhere for Cinema4D?
I seem to remember people mentioning one I (and saying it wasnt perfect) but I'm not sure where it was from...

I'm sure I've used ths millions of times, but most recently render selected is not working as expected....
if I drag in an object from within a nested stack - for instance if i drag in 'label2' (see screengrab attached), then it just outputs a black render.

If i drag in the 'Bottle' group however, then it works just fine.
Just started happening recently - but not sure what changed.

(include childern box is ticked)

Win10 pro, C4D R21. Corona 9.1.

I was watching a YT video by the excellent BlenderBob the other day - and he touched on something that has bugged me for quite a while.

When inserting bitmaps into a glosss/roughness/displacement texture - an extra step has to be taken to change the image profile fo linear. Surely as this almost ALWAYS is the case, it should be possible to make this the default profile for these steps?

See also extra steps adding Coronal normal node before a normal bitmap. Always needes to be done? Then node should be added by default.

Fingers crossed!

[C4D] I need help! / Help with granualar organic texture
« on: 2023-02-19, 10:47:26 »
Hi all.
I'm doing some food renders, but I'm having difficulty getting the level of detail I want in the textures. Previously I've had decent success just layereing noise in the displacement. But for some close-uo shots I need something better. Specifically with more depth and detail in the cavities.

There's an example of he sort of think I'm after attached (made in Modo).
Does anyone have a good idea how to do this in a highly art-directible way? I tried scattering clones, and even volume builder noises, but couldn't her enough control. Is vector displacement an option here? How would I get the maps?

[C4D] Resolved Bugs / crash (freeze) when rendering to PV.
« on: 2023-01-23, 11:27:45 »
Hallo. Actually this has been a problem for years. I never bothered reporting it as it was more of an inconvenience than catastrophic....

Very often I'm working in the Interactive Viewport - then when I'm happy with the result I press Render To Picture Viewer without first aborting the Initeractve Viewport. This causes C4D to freeze up and I need to quit from the task manager.

It happens frequently but not all the time. Doesn't seem to be file specific.

I like Corona a lot but ... Chaos seem to have raised the price in a pretty ham-fisted manner. I got the attached email today - which I assume contains a mistake. Unless it really is €418 per Month now :)

More seriously, is that I'm not sure why I wasn't consulted before being put on the 'Premium' tier. (There are now 2 tiers apparently, with 'Solo' being the base level. Although this wasnt mentioned on the email.) I dont think I have much use for Chaos Phoenix, player etc. And there isnt any mention of render nodes on the comparison so I'm not sure what the real advantage is.

Anyone from Chaos able to expand a little on this?

[C4D] General Discussion / Decals can't be transparent?
« on: 2022-09-11, 11:56:44 »
Hi all. I am trying to make a wet streak run across 3 different floor surfaces. I thought that using decals would be a perfect solution as it would run across all 3 objects and pick up the underlying dispacement - but unfortunately I cant get the decal to be transparent. Its always opaque white even if I have refraction turned on. Thin shell and changing the base colour make no difference. Is this a bug, or a limitation, or am I just doing something wrong?

[C4D] Bug Reporting / Ongoing Tonemapping problems...
« on: 2022-08-25, 12:42:25 »
General info: Corona 8 hotfix 1, C4D R21, Windows 10.

A commmon workflow for me is to render to the picture viewer, and while rendering is taking place, adjust the tonemapping parameters to get the desired look

It worked perfectly in V7. But since V8 there are a number of ongoing issues. Mostly effecting scenes created in previous versions:

1. When changing a a tonemapping parameter, the image in the pictureviewer doesn't update unless I zoom in or out.

2. Values typed into the fields often dont 'stick', leaving me to use the less exact 'scrubby' method.

3. The 'Reset' box triggers a pop-up 'are you sure you want to reset' dialogue. After pressing OK a duplicate of this dialogue seems to still be present behind the other open windows.

4. More of a general quibble than a bug - but it seems much less elegant to have the tonemapping settings pop-open in an additional panel. It would be preferable for it to unfold in the Post process panel.
