Title: Animation test - Flickering
Post by: 3DRenders on 2017-01-11, 13:09:14
Hi guys,

I've done a few tests for object animation, but i get lots of flickering...
No idea how i can fix this, so any help would be much appreciated.

I've tried the following:
1. Render this sample with GI set to: Path Tracing & UHD Cache, UhD Precision on 1 (Animation flicker-free preset)
https://www.dropbox.com/s/vocu1xtjg9ditee/1.mov?dl=0

2. Render this sample with GI set to: Path Tracing & UHD Cache, UhD Precision on the max of 20 (Animation flicker-free preset)
same as above - no difference

3. Render this sample with GI set to: Path Tracing & Path Tracing
https://www.dropbox.com/s/f86nsbk4kctqkap/3.mov?dl=0

Pass limit 50 - Not sure by increasing it, it will make it better...

Thank you

Did you set this to animation?
upd: ah sorry, I see now you mentioned this particular option
It looks like most flickering happens on highlights, did you try to increase highlight compression and see if its gone?

will give highlight compression a shot thanks ed.lefler

Ok i tried highlight compression with the lowest & highest setting with no luck...

Keeps flickering....

did you try highlight clamping? its located in rendersettings -> vfb settings -> image filter

maybe you could provide your scene, i wasnt able to reproduce your flickering with my foliage objects/materials *gg*

Hi hog0, ok will give it a try. What do you think is a good setting for Highlight clamping? I'll also test.

You mean sharing the settings without the foliage?

no i mean, you could upload the scene somewhere, so more ppl could give it a shot and try to figure it out :)

about the clamping - i dont really have an idea.. guess you would have to try values.. maybe start with a ~10frame (lower render time) animation somewhere so you can check if there is a flickering and if yes, clamp with value of 4 maybe, if nothing changes clamp it extreme with 1.. if thats over the top go back to 2ish? .. you will figure it out i guess :)

also check this out as an example..

there are lots of tutorials on the web about highlight clamping, but until YOU play around with it, you wont really understand what it does :)

The flickering visible in the animation has nothing to do with UHD Cache - it is the reflection of the sun randomly picked up by the foliage material. There are some common ways to fix this:

Using highlight clamping is also a good idea, but remember that it will clamp your output, so you will always lose some color depth.

By the way, it makes no sense to use UHD Cache in an exterior/studio scene like this. I would recommend PT+PT.

Sorry for the late reply guys.

hog0, i will have to make something else as the client wont be happy if i share his project.

Ok cool, thx for sharing will check it out.

Maru, thank you, will definitely have a look & try PT + PT

Hi guys, i've done some more tests for Interior & exterior

Still getting this ‘’flickering’’ or ''grain''.....

Here's some examples: (Dont watch it on dropbox player, otherwise you wont see it - rather download it)
https://www.dropbox.com/s/9gyr8d0h89otpuh/test%20a%20-%20interior.mov?dl=0
https://www.dropbox.com/s/nayy1p1bz9q08oc/test%20b%20-%20exterior.mov?dl=0

How can this be fixed?

Here's my settings currently:
Highlight clamping - 6
Image filter on Hann & px with on 2
passes 100
0.8 denoising
UHD cache on animation setting & set to 10

Thank you so much!

Have you tried rendering it as an image sequence instead of a .mov?

yes, thats how i do it. Always images...then put it together with quick-time.

I'm getting a 404 error. Can you re-upload your sequences?

Hi Maru, ok just fixed the links for you. I found the problem i think. The passes are now on 150 per frame and that grain is gone....! So much longer render time, but looking good without noise & grain.

The 1st issue (interior) could be due to material setup of the plant (leaves and bark) - could you show it?
Another idea is that it is caused by texture details being very small (close to 1px, or smaller), so that would be a typical AA issue.

The 2nd issue (exterior) happens when there is a reflective material (leaves) which catch sun reflection randomly. This is actually something that would happen in real life (imagine waves on the water, reflecting flickering sunlight).

The AA issues can be fixed by:
-enabling bloom and glare and blur+sharpen (defaults may work, but some tweaking may be needed), this will simply blur the pixels a little bit, but can obviously break the image for you if you are going to do some further post-processing on it
-allowing more passes to be rendered - this can be done by
a) allowing higher render time - then more passes will be rendered = better AA
b) lowering GIvsAA balance - this will devote more computing power to antialiasing than to GI, so you will get better AA, and similar overall image quality

The flickering sunlight issue can be fixed by:
-adjusting the material properties - e.g. lowering glossiness of the leaf material
-using a different environment lighting - for example an HDRI where the sun is behind clouds
-allowing more passes to be rendered for generally better quality (as explained in the previous point above)

Hi Maru!

Thanks for the reply.

Sure attached the setup.

Will definitely have a good test on the things you mention.
Thank you & have a good day!

Ok, other than the tips I already wrote you can try lowering diffuse level, and using a map for translucency, or at least some greenish color (probably the same map as for diffuse). You should also probably lower reflection glossiness.

ok thanks Maru!

I have lots of that noise on the ceramic as well. Here is my material. (Not sure if it's 100% correct)
