Just install 1.0, start Max, switch to Corona, start a rendering and activate the 45 day trial. [Max] Resolved Feature Requests / DrServer as windows service

Just want to know if there are plans to do so. I run DrServer as a windows service here on the farm nodes and workstations because I consider it more controllable, convenient and consistent.

If there are no plans about that in near future I could do a short how-to in the Goodies section using "non-sucking service manager". It´s simple to setup but maybe some not so advanced users can benefit from it. All others who are interested, take a look at http://www.nssm.cc/ - it´s a better altervative than the SRVANY.EXE approach imho.

Additionally it´s about having control about the rendering result while still having benefit of multiple machine power. This is our general workflow for quick projects. Fyi:

I don´t believe it´s very hard to fix but i´m waiting already quite a while for a fix (the first bugtrack entry for that bug was closed as "fixed", submission date was  2014-03-12).

Sure, but it´s always a matter of maintaining versions/tweaking the installer I fear. For me it would be just wonderful to have a stand alone 32bit download somewhere so our licenses could be up´n running within the next 3 Weeks.

[Max] Resolved Feature Requests / Corona license server on win32 server 2003 - how to?

I can´t run the installer or the manually unpacked LicensingServer.exe on our (yes i know: older ;) windows server 2003 which is used here to handle all software licenses (dongled or not) in our lan. Realy would like to avoid mixing things up and use another server or -even worse- workstation to handle the corona licenses.

LicensingServer.exe: File is valid, but is for a machine type other than the current machine
Installer:. Corona_1.00.00.exe is no valid Win32 application

Any chance?

(Didn´t put that into the bugtracker because I don´t consider this to be a real bug, or maybe yes - I don´t know yet)

Hi agentdark,

you don´t need a Max license for a render slave, just install Max without a serial number (as trial). But you do have indeed to install Max on all of them (and Corona + DrServer as well if you want to use Option B what you don´t want to miss...).

I don´t know if there is some limitation regarding EULA concerning the total number of render nodes to prevent a commercial renderfarm setup without buying any license (anyone knows?) but I have no knowledge of something like this. Anyway, technically you don´t need Max licenses (and I hope no Corona licenses next year ;) for a render slave.

I would suggest to setup a small test farm of 2 or 3 nodes to get into the topic and to learn how to handle a few other aspects like centralised assets and/or plugins, task priorities etc. in your local network.

my try:

Option A - Backburner (best for animation single frames imho, 1 frame per node)

1. Install Max + Backburner (see Autodesk docs) + Corona on all render slaves
2. Submit your job(s) to Backburner

Option B - "native" Corona distributed rendering (best for large single frames imho, x nodes per frame)

1. Install Max + Corona + Corona DR Server (see installer page 4) on all render slaves
2. Start DrServer.exe (you need write access to DrServer directory, either change user
    rights for the directory or use an elevated account)
3. Add render nodes at Render Setup -> Corona Settings -> Distributed Rendering by clicking "Search LAN",
   your render slaves should appear now
4. Check "Enable" box in that flyout
5. Render

Pitfalls: Firewall(s), non-UNC network paths, user rights, cached DNS entries/non working DNS reverse lookup.

Of course you can have both. And a more convenient option for drserver is to run it as Windows service,
easy to setup for example with http://www.nssm.cc/ (which I prefer personally). Maybe future
corona installers will allow to install DrServer as a windows service. Hmm, Mantis, I´m on my way.
