[Max] Feature Requests / Re: The most wanted feature?

Hi! How come Corona's material library is so slow, while Vray's is so fast?

Thanks!

Andrey Kozlov says that is working on a new type of raytracing:

Quote
Working on a new ray tracing acceleration structure. Ray tracing speedup up to 5 times on heavy geometry. Faster than Nvidia RTX. Faster geometry compilation up to 2 times.

so faster rendering paired with better tone mapping and memory-consumption improvements would be nice when possible

Sure, for example Corona and V-Ray are using these raytracing acceleration libraries: https://www.embree.org/

Thanks! So exists new technologies and therefore libraries to implement faster path-tracing than Embree one? My idea was that all path-tracer render engines were similarly powerful in standard scenes and equivalent horse power.

[Max] General Discussion / New Raytracing possibilities

Hi! Just to discuss future tech stuff and not to compare render engines.

Andrey Kozlov wrote some days ago:

How is it possible for software(?) raytracing to run faster than specialized hardware? Exists some white papers that discuss new possibilities?

Cheers,
Giorgio

Hardware / ROG Strix GL702ZC with ryzen 1700 - worth it?
« on: 2018-12-15, 13:08:49 »
Hi! I've a laptop with an intel core i7 6700HQ and 16GB DDR3 paired with an nvidia 960m 4GB.
Because of constant 'low memory' messagges I'm wondering if a laptop like the ROG Strix GL702ZC with a Ryzen 7 1700, 32GB of ram and a RX580 that cost around 1300€ is a good choice for a freelance that mainly work with interior arch-viz scenes.
Similar build would cost the same without chance to bring it to the customer for defining things ecc.

Thanks for answering!

Off-Topic / 3DS Max 2019 UI is very slow!

Hi! Anyone know how to resolve this problem? Load a subobject panel takes 3-5 second on my machine..

[Max] General Discussion / Re: Corona 1.3 Benchmark

So the same CPU in desktop workstation can perform up to 2X better?
They are the first times with a (slightly) biased solution, so to reduce render times I've to necessarily buy a dedicated workstation.

Thanks

Hi! I'm doing some test and I'd like to know if this render times are alligned with my specs.

I own a laptop Dell Inspiron 7559 (Intel Core i7 6700HQ, Nvidia GeForce GTX 960M, 16GB/1600Mhz, SSD 850EVO) and from benchmark tool I got 00:06:48.45, which is one of the worst results (first result was 00:04:51.49)

I've also converted an old scene done with V-Ray 2.x, where I used at the end almost only materials from the Corona Library and for one image of ~2K my laptop took 4 hours to clean up to 5%(+denoiser) at ~700K rays/s without "low on ram" alert.
Maybe is a conflictive scene because of GI and DOF, but I had read that normal values will be within 1,5M and 4M.

If I can afford, I would like to ask you something else!
For the velvet you used a shader mix with a color and a fallof as you often see online?
It looks really cool!

Thanks

Hi George , yes exactly we used a corona layered mtl with two variations of falloff in the diffuse, and a fabric folds map composed with a classic fabric bitmap on the bump slot. Actually is pretty close to the example below. btw thanks also by me!

Very nice, simple and effective :-) thanks so much!

Good work!
Can I ask where you usually look for plants like the one you used?
