Hello,
I have this issue since I updated Max 2022 to version 2022.1
When I pick a material from scene in the slate editor, it has no angle brackets, like if it is not assigned and also the button in the editor to select by material is grayed out like if the material is effectively not assigned... but if I assign it to a random object, then the brackets are shown and I can use the "select by material" button again, selecting all the objects that have the material applied.
If I clear the material editor, it forgets everything and does the same issue again... (it does it with any kind of material)
Does anyone have the same problem, or any suggestion?
Thanks in advance!

[Max] I need help! / Minor issue with photometric lights
« on: 2020-08-04, 10:52:23 »
Hello everyone,
I always have a problem with standard photometric spotlights in my corona scenes; I use them when I need narrow beam light angles because with Corona lights I would introduce too much noise if I increase the directionality too much.
I setup photometric lights using Corona shadows and I activate Corona area shadows.
The problem is that, whenever I make a copy of a photometric light, the new light has the area shadows deactivated. By now I know the problem and remember to check them but sometimes I miss one, with the result of some ugly hard shadows in my final renders...
Does anybody have the same problem? (I use Max2019 or 2020 and Corona 5)
Also, maybe someone can advice me on how I could make narrow beam lights using Corona lights instead of standard lights?
Thanks for any help/info!
Best,

Patrick

[Max] I need help! / How to boost reflections?
« on: 2020-04-10, 12:28:29 »
Hello everybody,
my problem is the following: I need to render some interiors with wallcovers and textiles that have  metallic effects, silk and other materials with particular reflections, like in the example images.
I make good looking materials in a testing scene but in the rooms that I have to render, there is very little exterior hard light (if at all...) and the illumination is mostly diffuse, with recessed led strips and a few small cone spots, so the reflections don't come out very much, even if I exagerate them.
My workaround is to render a reflection render element and add it in Photoshop where I need it, but I'd like to know if anybody has a way to do the same thing directly in 3dsMax with some material that can add reflections on top of the base material to boost them even if it's not physically correct. If I remember well, there was something like that in Vray…
Thanks for any suggestion!
Best regards,

Patrick

[Max] I need help! / Interactive lightmix environment doubt
« on: 2019-06-13, 18:50:58 »
Hello everybody,
I just tried using the new "multiple suns" feature of the lightmix of version 4 but I would like to use the Corona Sky maps for the environment and It looks like I can't link two different Corona Sky maps to the two suns I have in scene, so when I do the mix the sky always refers to only one sun and looks wrong in the other scenario.
Am I missing something? Or should I use hdr environment maps instead of the procedural sky?
I hope my question is clear enough…
Thanks for any help!

[Max] I need help! / Problem with Corona Distance Texmap
« on: 2019-05-17, 13:00:39 »
Hello everyone,
I have an issue with distance map, using the "color inside" option of the map. I want to use it to apply different materials on a terrain (and also as a mask for the CScatter grass)
The object that defines the roads is made with an extruded spline, which shouldn't have issues, since the extrusion is capped correctly on top and bottom.
The shape is quite complex and, because of that, some portions of the terrain have the wrong materil applied. If I try to add or remove vertices to the spline, the resulting errors vary in position and shape. I have tried dividing it in two o more separate objects but the result is quite the same…
Does anybody have found a solution or workaround to this particular issue?
I attach a couple screenshots…
Thanks in advance,

Patrick

Hello,
I attach a couple of renders where I have issues with scattered items (corona proxies); I have a scatter with grass and a scatter with bushes and plants. In some points of the images the bushes disappear behind the grass (they look like they have a wrong mask), while their shadow is still visible.
I still have to investigate the problem but maybe someone have a suggestion on what could have happened.
Thank you in advance!

[Max] I need help! / Render stamp
« on: 2018-12-14, 10:32:30 »
Hello,
is there an automated way to use render stamp during work without it showing on saved images?
I know that I can turn it off before saving the image, but if I use backburner or auto-save the finished render it will be embedded in the image and the risk is to forget to turn it off before launch.
Maybe a check box option to show the stats at render time but save the file without them could be useful? (or maybe the possibility to show stats only in interactive but not in production)
Thank you for any advice!

[Max] Resolved Bugs / Can't open old file with Corona 3
« on: 2018-12-04, 12:16:07 »
Hello,
I have installed Corona 3 and I can't open a file that was created with Max 2016 and Corona 2; I've tried both with Max 2016 and Max 2019 but both remain stuck with the pop-up asking about the new displacement mode. Other files, even with displacement applied, are opened correctly...
Any idea?
Thank you,

Patrick

(I've tried to import everything in a new scene but it doesn't work; same behaviour...)

[Max] I need help! / White balance doubt
« on: 2018-11-06, 09:50:14 »
Hello everyone,
I have an issue with scene lighting: I'm facing difficulties in having neutral greys in my renders. Of course it's normal in scenes with mixes of natural and artificial lighting but I Always see a shift wowards red that I have to correct in Photoshop or using various LUTs to minimize it.
I attach a screenshot of a studio setup that I use to create and apply materials to the models before I put them in the real scenes; it's lit only with 2800K light panels, everything has neutral colors and the white balance is set to 2800K but the render shows up shifted towards red.
Is it normal? Or am I missing something?
Thank you for any advice!
Best,

Patrick

[Max] I need help! / Infinity Mirror
« on: 2018-10-10, 14:19:21 »
Hello everybody,
I need help obtaining the effect of this attached photo...
I’ve used refractive and reflective surfaces (like in the real mirror I think) and it works but it does less reflections than the real one. I’ve tried increasing the max bounces parameter but it doesn’t solve the problem... any advice?
Thank you!

Hello,
I'm experiencing a difference in color temperature between the interactive render and the final rendered image; I set my desired colours with the interactive but when I render, the colors look shifted towards red. I think it may be an issue with the .lut settings of the camera (I use the .lut files provided with Corona).
Can anybody please help me with this issue? Are there any materials/settings that aren't considered in interactive mode?
Thank you in advance for any help!

Hello,
I've noticed that the option to use "area (soft) shadows" with 3ds Max photometric lights seems to be a global value, that can't be changed individually for different lights in the scene. I'can't have a spotlight with soft shadows and one without them in the same scene; if I turn area shadows on/off or if I change the radius, all lights are influenced (of course I've checked that the different lights in scene are not instances...).
Is it normal or is it a bug on my side?
(I currently use 3ds Max 2016 and Corona 1.7)
Thanks for any help about this!

[Max] Feature Requests / Corona AO map suggestion
« on: 2018-05-02, 11:17:37 »
Hello,
I think it could be useful to have a choice, in the include/exclude list, to calculate the occlusion including only objects with the same material applied. For example I often make metal materials like patina bronze for interior design objects and isually in that case the patina effect shouldn't be influenced by surrounding objects. I know that I could use the include/exclude list or attach the different parts into a single object, but sometimes I think that an inclusion by material could be practical.
Just an idea...
Thank you,

Patrick

[Max] Bug Reporting / Photometric lights with Corona shadows
« on: 2018-05-02, 11:06:19 »
Hello,
I occasionally have a problem with photometric spotlights with corona shadows applied; they work correctly when I create them but occasionally (not every time!) if I need them in a different scene and I save them with "save selected...", they lose corona shadows and return to their standard shadows.
Of course I receive a warning at render time and I can fix them but I'd like to know what I'm doing wrong or if it's a bug.
Thank you!

Hello,
would it be a good idea to add, in the materials that use a triplanar map, a float controller to control the scale of all the maps of the material with a single value? In that way it would be faster to tweak the materials for different needs and units setup.
Just an idea...
