I've been tackling photogrammetry for 2 years now, here and there between regular projects. Had a lot of failures and gave up on this many times. Last year Bertrand Benoit posted in October his guide on photogrammetry, also during SOA Day#7 Radoslav Ignaciuk shared his workflow on photogrammetry. All this information was put to good use and the results are talking for themselves. Thank you Bertrand and Radoslav for sharing your insights.
All proudly rendered with Corona.

So after 2 years of research, you basically scanned your nuts?

Just kidding obviously. ;) The results are amazing - great example of how not giving up is important in the process or producing something awesome. I wonder whether you are sharing or selling your models somewhere? Or maybe you are willing to share some parts of your photogrammetry workflow?

Hi, LuckyFox.

Very pleasant result. I remember Radoslav showing that magical stuff with auto texture unwrap in SOA7. Do you involve it in your workflow? Just wanted to ask name of that software. Need to install for freetime tests :)

So after 2 years...
You will laugh, but some 4-5 years ago I bought 5 very nice looking walnuts with the idea to push me to learn more of Zbrush and model them. Years passed by but yes! I finally scanned my nuts! :D  The models were created for sale. They are on Envato's 3Docean.
the workflow I am using is pretty much based on Bertrand's guide:
http://bertrand-benoit.com/blog/the-poor-mans-guide-to-photogrammetry/
I have a 3 light mini studio setup for the photography process. Nikon D90 kit lens 18-105. I shoot raw, process in Lightroom, end up with 2 sets of tiffs for Photoscan - one very contrasty for the build up process and one very flat and non constrasty for the albedo/diffuse texture generation. Export from Photoscan(obj). Zremesh, UVs in Zbrush, project details from high to low poly model, bake displacement, normal, ao. Import retopo/unwrapped high detail model back to the saved photoscan project, generate diffuse keeping the uv mapping generated in Zbrush. Create specular map in Photoshop from diffuse+displacement maps. Import meshes(low and high detail) to 3ds max, scale them to the right size.
Some personal experience comments: I tried solutions from autodesk, both free ones and paid - didn't come to good result in terms of geometry details. Not best results with RealityCapture and crashes. Photoscan is non consistent, I can have 4 fails to align photos and 5th attempt it just aligns them - the main reason I was giving up before until I found I just have to keep trying or align in chunks. Photoscan needs lots of ram, I have a 64gb workstation and some dense point clouds just won't calculate with very high detail setting because not enough ram.

3D architect the software is UVlayout, I didn't have such models yet that require advanced uv work, Zbrush just handles well the meshes I gave it till now.

Great results !! I'm amazed by the level of detail you manage to extract. I'm exploring photogrammerty myself and I'm trying to setup a cross polarized setup. Disappointed also by Reality caputre, buggy, laggy, maybe fast but the interface looks completely unfinished and crashing a lot for a rather expensive product.

Funny because I wasn't convinced at all by BBB3 viz workflow, too much speculars, cumbersome "2 sets" workflow, etc... and everywhere I see mind blowing results (mostly fruits & nuts) with his technique. I guess I've not failed and given up enough ;)

Out of curiosity, how much pictures do you take for one object ?

Thank you, Pixelab!
I do not count as I shoot, so sometimes is more sometimes is less.
Some examples:
the main walnut 256
garlic 166
hazelnut 55

I am curious about your insights on cross polarised setup as I had to abort some shots due to strong speculars because I don't have yet polarising filter.

Really nice models!

I too know the pain of photogrammetry and the hours of trial and error. I find agisoft photoscan rarely works the same way twice. I think I have found a workflow that works, then I do the exact same thing again for another model and for some reason beyond my understanding it doesn't work. Can be immensely frustrating, but worth the effort!

I will write a post on my blog as soon as the technique is in perfect running order. I'm trying to reproduce (more or less) the setup here : http://pixellighteffects.com/2016/05/cross-polarized-prop-scanning/

Sounds like you weren't particularly happy with either Photoscan or Reality Capture, but you ended up using Photoscan(?)

Looks solid,

I am thinking into getting into photogrammetry myself, are there any resources that are helpful for starting out?

What lens/camera settings do you recommend?

There are lots of videos with tips on youtube. Personally, I get my basic knowledge of photogrammetry from the one and only Bertrand. I perfected my skill over the years, there are things you get to understand only by trying and failing.
https://bertrand-benoit.com/blog/the-poor-mans-guide-to-photogrammetry/

The scans in the start of this topic are done with Nikon D90 and a kit lens 18-105mm. So it doesn't need a lot of money to start with photogrammetry. The later ones from page 2 are with D850 and a prime macro lens 105mm or for bigger subjects a Zeiss Milvus 35mm. Some scans are shot with f8 aperture some others with f16(regardless of the diffraction adding up). Good luck!

Thanks for purchasing from me. I am considering creating some packs, though the price is already low for the amount of work each of these scans needs. Also take into consideration the value they give to the buyer. For example the almond and pistachio that you have bought have a high reusability on various projects and will buy itself back in no time. For very specific products like celeriac which might not have high reusability, the price is very democratic in respect to similar products on the market.

oooo I don't know about that bacon hot dog, it makes me feel REAAALLL uncomfortable.
It looks less like bacon and more like raw flesh wrapped around an uncooked hotdog.

I understand your feelings, I had the same sensation when I was scanning it. Yet, this is a type of hotdog sold here in Sweden at Pressbyrån, convenience store chain close to metro stations and other crowded places.
I guess they serve them very rare, LOL.
Here are some different colors to take us back to summer fruits :) Captured during summer, but processed this week:

Great results !! I'm amazed by the level of detail you manage to extract. I'm exploring photogrammerty myself and I'm trying to setup a cross polarized setup. Disappointed also by Reality caputre, buggy, laggy, maybe fast but the interface looks completely unfinished and crashing a lot for a rather expensive product.

Hey LuckyFox, love your work I have been following this thread for awhile. I do a bit of photogrammetry myself and always have troubles with shadows in the albedo. Can you share some tips about your lighting setup and how you get around this particular issue?

I have the 360 degree capture working with the 'in the void' technique, but I want to capture the material specular/height detail for my next models and also have a clean albedo. My first thoughts for the material capture is take a photo with the lights unpolarised, then one with them cross polarised for the specular capture, is this similar to your process for capturing the specular pass? Cross polarised for the albedo texture. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Hi James! My setup is a ring lightR300 with a linear polarizer foil attached directly on it with tape. Behind the ring light is my Nikon D850 with a Hoya circular polarization filter attached to the lens(60macro or 105macro). My glossiness maps are converted from albedo/diffuse with eyeballing of "what looks believable" for my subject. Because the ring light is in front of the camera I get flat photos without or almost without shadows. Regarding your idea for capturing the gloss/spec by difference of polarized and unpolarized capture, I never tried it even though I know about such technique. I think it's making the process longer for a small gain. My scans all have guesstimated gloss map and most of them work fine I think, though a perfect real captured gloss would raise the level even higher of course. Good luck!

Thanks for that, thats excellent information about the camera/lighting setup to go from I really appreciate it! I might be back in a few months with some new questions or hopefully something to share :)

Ive also been extracting the spec/normal details from the diffuse however I think you have done an excellent job adjusting this by eye, very good job!

I was hoping to combine photogrammetry with material capture using the technique I seen by this creative group of artists.

Thanks again

Excellent scans, as always! Have you tried the new Reality Scan app from Reality Capture?

Thanks ingemar! I don't have an iPhone, as the initial beta phase is only for iPhone users. But it looks promising, though I expect less detail in respect to conventional turntable and a DSLR/mirrorless approach. Have you signed up for beta and tested it?

I took it for a literal spin yesterday. The results are… promising. The UI is pretty clever but my test model lacked textures. I tested Trnio right after and the model looked better - but it might just have been the texturing that fooled me.

Anyway, it’s early days for RealityScan. I hope it will at least put some pressure on the competitors to improve the scan quality. Until then, I guess I will just have to blow the dust off my turntable : )

Thanks for your insight, ingemar! I tested Qlone some time ago - it's fine for quick shape capture, with texture it looks fine, but the mesh is just featureless approximation. And needs a printed A4 paper with targets for the app to catch it.
Here is another +10 from me.  Hotdog from Pressbyrån.

I agree, smartphone scanning is not quite ready for production work.

The hotdog looks great! It looks just as plasticky as in the real world. By the way, have you considered doing half-eaten and/or spoiled fruit? A half-eaten apple would add a bit of life to many interior renders.

Thanks ingemar! I might look into rotten, half-eaten stuff later on. 1st I want to build a pretty decent library of at least one scan of each most common type of fruits and vegetables and some man-made food like bread and bakery. That is one long way to go...a few years could be enough hopefully :D
Had a break from scanning, but back at it again. Here is another 10. The peanuts have 32K diffuse resolution. And the grill season if officially opened, a Chorizo sausage to celebrate that:

And another 9 scans. This batch is focusing heavily on mangoes. One big advantage of being a photogrammetry artist is that you get to taste all kinds of fruits and vegetables. Knowing a thing or 2 about mangoes now I can highly recommend Sweet Sugar Mangoes from Colombia. If you ever manage to see them in your store, get them - the best mangoes ever. As always check the nuts scans renders in full res.

Nice scans as usual. I wonder how on earth you manage to photoscan things as small as sunflower seeds? I find it's hard to keep most of the subject in focus when shooting anything smaller than a fist, even with my smaller sensor camera. Do you do focus bracketing?

I see, that must take helluva lot more time and effort to scan compared to usual turntable session, isn't? Perhaps you have some automated system to take photos for you?

Thanks a lot romullus!
And here is a next batch of 9 scans. 2 tough ones I had to deal with: potato chip - thin, translucent and fragile and second toughie was the truffle - little did I know it shrinks(dries) as it is exposed to air and heat from the lamp. Shapeshifting is a kick in the nuts for photogrammetry. Speaking of nuts - the almond that is mostly one plain color was tricky as well to get right. Currently running a Black Friday Promo on RonenBekerman with 50% discount on all my scans, be sure to check it out as it starts in 2 days!

Back to the roots of this thread, 6 years ago my 1st successful scans were walnuts. I decided to go a bit bigger this time and use 400mpx of pixel shift shots to see what comes out.
6144 total shots compiled into 384 pixel-shifted composites which resulted in 64(4 orbits of 16) focus stacked inputs for RC.
Resolution 23264x17448, that's roughly 400 Mpx - a sample of such is available here: https://we.tl/t-L2OW7qTown. 310mln mesh resulted from quite quick RC calculation, which cost me just 2186 credits(~5$).
My takeaways from this: a lot of data, the whole processing of it takes so much longer than photogrammetry scan itself and post. I doubt pixel shift added all that much quality result in respect to regular 100Mpx of GFX100S - and there are lots of chromatic aberrations and/or pixelshift artifacts.
Even though I shot in a static place on a sturdy tripod fuji's pixel shift combiner software was complaining that it registered some movement, just a dozen of shots came without warning, but there was no much sharpness difference in them either.

Spicy stuff was my focus lately. I scanned few of the hottest chili peppers on earth, including carolina reaper and trinidad scorpion. The tricky part about photoscanning such subjects is the homogenous featureless surfaces. To overcome this challenge I've used a long-time proven technique - permanent marker dots. Also it helps if the subject is a bit dirty or dusty. It adds an additional step of clonestamping the diffuse in the end, but it's worth it.

One tricky subject to scan. It dries and changes shape so quick in front of the ring light. A lot of manual fixing and texture clonestamping was needed. Spicy!

Sometimes I'm not choosing subjects for scanning, they choose me. I ran into this cute small bell pepper while grocery shopping - and it was so perfect in all senses that it was screaming to become digitally immoral. A small weekend project in itself, with scanning of tail and body separate to then reunite in 3D. Paprika is love.

I grew to love and appreciate blueberries more since I moved to Sweden. I've scanned various ones over the years I've lived here, this last one being my best to date. It has a 16K diffuse texture that can withstand even extreme close-up renders. 6264 shots @100Mpx focus stacked into 216 inputs that were processed by Reality Capture. Original mesh at 32mln triangles processed into 3 LODs with proper quad-retopology and manual unwrap. Yummy!

To all corona renderer users from Sweden - Glad midsommar! May your potatoes be well cooked and the dill tender and savoury.
My current collection of scanned potatoes includes 8 pieces. With the occasion of midsommar I'm giving away the latest one I've scanned, fresh from Malmö, for free to use in personal or commercial projects.

Short season berry from my childhood.

I grew up in a townhouse with a small adjacent garden where my family had a few bushes of gooseberry that I was eager to eat as a child. Sometimes I wouldn't even wait for them to get ripe...

The sourness would make you squint so hard you could see your ancestors...

I challenged myself to scan this berry even though it had a high chance to fail with photogrammetry due to translucency. It worked since the berry was not very clean and the small fuzz and impurities on the surface helped with reconstruction. Captured with a GFX100S with focus stacking, processed in RC, and rendered with Chaos Corona.
