max 2025 selection of objects goes wrong

(1/2) > >>

This is 3dsmax related, not Corona. So off-topic, I know, but I'm certain this is a new 'bug'....I'm wondering if anyone knows why this is happening to me for the past few months?

I try to select an object and it selects the bigger, more simple object behind. Every damn time.

In the video below I'm demonstrating that I want to select the sofa (which has many more edges) but the BASE object (behind/underneath the sofa) is constantly selected - which is unintended, of course.

It's extremely frustrating. What have I done to cause this?

Any help MUCH appreciated! :)

maru:
Is the sofa made up of regular geometry or is it some "special" object like a proxy, xref, or similar?

aaouviz:
No, it's a mesh/poly.

I should clarify; this isn't happening in just this instance, but in all scenes. It seems to select larger objects such as floors or ceilings, rather than the object the mouse is hovering over.

Again, I think this is new behaviour. Any help appreciated :)

Maybe it's worth checking your preferences>viewports settings? "Improved" viewport selection hit algorithm was driving me nuts in Max 2024, until i reduced selection pixel radius to 2. Your issue looks different than it was for me, but maybe they have added some new settings there in Max 2025, you never know.

aaouviz:
Good tip, thanks - I did try this but without any luck unfortunately :(

Very frustrating
