Hi Corona chaps. Long time no speak.

Due to the spiraling costs of Corona and Cinema I moved all my production over to blender before Christmas. My Corona license expires today, and although I still believe it's the best renderer out there, it's just too expensive to make sense any more. My question is; If for some reason I need to revisit an old job that was rendered in Corona, can I just buy a 1 month subscription so that I can open/render it etc. I just want to be sure it will render just fine. I understand I won't have my nodes any more but that's not an issue.

Sorry but this is not helpful as I can't nail down the issue but since updateing to the latest V8 build I'm seeing many more crashes. Cinema just blinks out. Not even a freeze, it just disappears. It's usually after I've set the interactive render going and click on something or move the view but I can't be certain what it is.. This is the first time I've had this with Corona and nothing else has changed since I updated (although there was a recent R25 auto update...). It may not even be Corona of course, but it seems to be after the update. I'd go back a build but the NaN issue is actually more of a pain so I'll put up with the crashes for a bit :-)

Anyway, if I can figure out whats doing it I'll let you know. Just thought I'd mention it in case others are seeing increased crashes too.

Edit:  OK, it seems to be happening with scenes that were created using a previous build that I'm now trying to render/work on in the current build. I managed to get one scene working fine by opening and immediately copying everything to a new blank scene and saving that. Then the new scene works fine. Could this mean it's nothing to do with the objects/textures but more the scene settings??? Hmmmm. Maybe a fluke but worth a try.

[C4D] I need help! / Team render with differing RAM

Hi Folks,

I've just bought a new M1 Max laptop with 64Gb RAM in it to use as my main Corona machine. It's very nice but I'm fingin that when I try and team render with my other previous mac mini with only 16Gb Ram I'm getting very slow render times and sometimes the info message says 'rendering on 2 nodes' then drops to '1 node'... Is this because of the RAM difference? Is there a way I can have TR send smaller 'slices' to the mini so it handles them better?
Weirdly, when I had just the mini and an old PC (which had 64GB RAM), I could TR to the PC from the mini and I never had this problem, I got speedy renders and the node count was always 2.... I've even tried TR to the PC from the laptop, so both machines have 64GB but rendertimes are MUCH slower than with just the M! Max on its own (The PC is a 1st Gen Threadripper).
I've tried changing the TR settings to Arbitrated 20/256 packets but if anything it makes things worse...

All macs running Cinema R25 in M1 Silicon mode with lates V8 Corona build.

Any ideas?

If Corona is a physical renderer that doesn't use shadow maps then how come I get a message saying 'rendering shadow maps' ? This is with V5 RC2?

No other lights other than corona ones in the scene by the way?

Hello,

I have a scene with a reasonably complex product with a few lights and a few not too big textures, nothing out of the ordinary. I'm doing a spin round render over team render on a mac and PC. The Mac is i9 and the PC threadripper. When the spin started each frame was taking 2mins each on each machine, now, 25 frames in they are taking 10 minutes per frame!! This is nuts.. Both machines have 64Gb Ram and Corona is set for UHD cache and 15 pass limit. Why on earth would it be getting longer and longer?
I know this used to be a problem back in the early days but surely it must have been solved by now? We're on V4 and nearly 5 for goodness sake.

I cannot send the scene as its very NDA and I daren't stop it as it must be finished in the morning.

Any ideas what could be causing such an issue? Is it just team render perhaps?

Note the view hasn't changed much in 25 frames so it should not be taking longer.

Hi There,

I'm trying to convert a redshift scene to Corona. One of the things I need to do is colour up a ton of instances based on their display colour. Is there some way I can reference this in Corona? Set Driver - Driven doesn't work because it only picks up the display colour of the original object and not the instances. I need one shader that 'sees' the display colour. This is easy in Redshift as it has a node for it but I can't figure out if its possible in Corona.

IN The render settings there's an option to 'Render 3rd party materials'

When should I turn this on? There's no mention of this in the help section (I was going to say manual but there isn't one! ) and I can't find a mention of it in the forum.

[C4D] General Discussion / Multiple sky objects ? - Solved!

Hi There,

I'm trying to have multiple sky objects so that I can have a different reflection source to the lighting source. i.e. an HDRI in one sky with a compositing tag with only 'seen by reflections' checked and another sky with a different HDRI or a Sun with another tag with all the rest checked.

For some reason I'm not seeing reflections from the checked tag? Does Corona support multiple sky objects? If not, what's the best way to go about this scenario?

Please please please can you swap the render button on the interactive renderer to be the 'start IR' option? This drives me nuts every day, when I'm doing lookdev etc I don't want to do a final render, I want to keep restarting the IR so it picks up lighting/material changes it sometimes doesn't if I just leave it. When I want a final render I can click render to picture viewer in Cinema, or click and hold the IR button.

The number of times I accidentally click it to refresh the IR and it starts rendering a final render is very frustrating. Jut hitting 'refresh' doesn't work as it doesn't rescan the scene so often misses changes.

Hi Folks,

Before I push the button and buy I'd like some idea of when realistically we'll be seeing procedural 3d noise availability in the volume material ? I could really do with this to make nice clouds/smoke etc like we can in Vray. Are we talking weeks?  Months..... years.....?

[C4D] Resolved Bugs / Team Render libembree Crash mac

Hi There,

Still can't get TR to work on anything more complex than a cube. Scenes with even simple geometry seem to start OK with loading of assets etc. then crash on the TR machine. Always libembree. I'm attaching a bug report. Rendering from Mac Pro Sierra, R18 latest with Corona May 5th build to Hackintosh Yosemite, R18 with Corona May 5th build.

Note that if I do make a super simple scene with a cube and daylight, then it works fine, so its not the hardware.

Just a test image to try out Corona for C4d and how it compares with other renderers. I like it! Now officially my favourite renderer!
C4D, Corona & Photoshop. The only post work is comping in the Pyrocluster trail on the meteor and a bit of vibrance.

Hi Folks,

Is there any way of hiding a sky with an HDR material from the alpha channel? I've got a scene lit with a nice HDR sky I'd like to keep in the image, but I want only the scene objects to affect the alpha channel so I can grade them in photoshop independent from the sky. I tried the compositing tag 'hide from mask' but that didn't work. Hide from camera works, but then it doesn't show in the render :-)

I have to say, Corona is fantastic! After a few weeks of making every scene in Octane, Vray and Corona just to make comparisons, its looking like Corona is blowing the other two away! A few niggles with things not quite working yet (I'm looking at you Team Render), its a really beautiful and bloody fast renderer! Keep up the good work.
