It's all in reflections.
At shallow angles, simple blend material looks good enough . At steeper ones, puddles doesn't look right. Will think how to fix it.

Or to create "real" puddles you can add a second plane with water material and model/add displacement to your ground plane.

Yes, separate mesh puddles is practically the only option when ground mesh has uneven surface, because texture puddles look very odd in that case. On the other hand, on flat surface, textured puddles is better solution. Actually, i had them work better now, by removing refraction component from puddles part.
