General CG Discussion / Re: Rhino to 3DSMax
« on: 2022-11-21, 12:31:39 »
From my tests, it's no longer possible to export a clean and well-organized model from Rhino post Rhino 5.

Currently I run rhino 7 for compatibility and save down to rhino 5 for exporting. There was a small change in the obj exporter that means it's no good anymore. I have raised this issue on the Rhino forums, but I just get the forum-equivalent of blank-stares and the suggestions of how to work-around the problem just results in circular and contradictory logic.

In my opinion, in rhino 5, these are the best setting for exporting. It will give you object naming that is logical.

Hardware / Re: Ryzen 5950x build
« on: 2021-05-01, 17:33:55 »
Hi fellas,

Just built a 5950x workstation with essentially exactly the same specs as the others here. So far so good but I cannot get to 3600 with the ram. 3200 is the closest I can get and it seems this is a common problem...

Is anyone else facing this issue atm?

I hid a twins peaks ref in this: https://brooklynreporter.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/02/Friends-of-Brooklyn_IndustryCity_copyright-www.mir_.no_revision.jpg
'scuse the hijack...

edit: two actually. One is a bit obvious...

Hey there,

I'm afraid this is really stretching the limit of my maxscript knowledge. If you head to http://www.scriptspot.com/3ds-max/scripts/automultimatte and drop a comment petitioning the creator to update it, maybe he'll do so.  Sorry I can't help any more :(

I think I binned the scene because I was a couple of hours away from a deadline but my gratitude is for future problems :)

For me it's still a robust and more 'flexible' aerial perspective and/or volume fog solution in corona.

Awesome. Thanks!

Except when you ask the converter to switch renderer to corona?

Ok i'll keep that in mind for next time. Odd that the converter didn't pick that up?

Hiya,

Just about threw my workstation out the window waiting for vrayRT or IPR to produce even a preview so I converted the scene to Corona but now I only get black material editor previews...
Just checked a different scene made with Corona and it works fine so this seems to be scene specific.

Restarted max, ran the converter again but no luck. Any ideas?

I use Sergo Pogosyan's Automultimatte script for vray on every job. Love it and have been missing it sorely with corona.
I hacked his vray script to work with Corona. Only works with CoronaMtl, CoronaLayeredMtl and CoronaLightMtl (plus the max standard mats that worked with the vray version of the script.)

Anyhow hopefully it's useful for some.

Here's the original script's scriptspot page for info and whatnot: http://www.scriptspot.com/3ds-max/scripts/automultimatte

2.0

Upon further investigation, it seems that if the CoronaSun's target isn't perfectly aligned with the Daylight's compass then the sun angle is incorrect. Now that I know it's fine, but this could land someone in a lot of trouble if they don't realise it...

Hello there,

I always use a daylight system to make sure I'm rendering with plausible sun angles for a given site's location.
I noticed (mid-way through a project) that the CoronaSun now has a target. Interesting... Thankfully I tried moving the target to see what happened, and oh dear, it completely changed the angle of the sun, even though I'm using a daylight system... It should all be locked down, shouldn't it? (unless in manual mode).

I've been switching over to a vraysun to see if the CoronaSun matches vraysun and nope, it doesn't seem to care where I put the target or the Daylight compass, it's completely different from the vraysun result.

Whats the deal here? This seems like a remarkably dangerous bug if it is indeed a bug.

Edit: well no other sun but the coronaSun produces direct light it seems in Corona, so in fact I have no way to be sure the coronaSun is in the right position...

edit: my two cents
Vray's strength(s): much more capable of handling super dense, high memory scenes without a fuss...
hi, thanks for that 2 cents. but about the interesting part, what did you mean about high memory scenes without a fuss..  i think i dont really get it.. is it about the memory efficiency or the stability / "out of core" rendering?
i'll appreciate if you or anyone here share the result of corona vray memory comparison here. or at least share the link please if there is existing related article out there

Try rendering a highly tesselated car interior with CAD data provided by the manufacturer in 12k resolution, with maps for leather, fabric etc. in 8k. You will run out of RAM with Corona quite quickly because the progressive render mode alone takes a share of the system RAM. Bucket render in V-Ray on the other hand is very efficient. If you need even more RAM, let V-Ray render straight to disk without any framebuffer at all. Corona might be able to do this as well, don't know.

A good point made by Olli: Progressive renderer in Vray will also use more memory.

Vray seems to be more memory efficient (which I believe is a known thing). I can throw a giant scene at vray with 100's of lights, 1000's of proxies (some massive in disk size also), and insane Revit model(s) and it'll render fast, and not complain, whereas corona will start to give me memory warnings and tell me the rendering will come out with dark spots or somesuch. To be honest this has only happened on one very complex project, however it has informed my decision on which engine to use for which type of project. This is (just one of the reasons) why I still use both renderers.
