[Max] General Discussion / Re: rendering large images
« on: 2019-06-10, 12:56:03 »
From how close will the billboard will be looked at?
I mean, how much detail do you really need? For billboard print I have great experience  up-scaling my image using Gigapixel AI https://topazlabs.com/gigapixel-ai/.
I've compared image rendered at 10k and the one that I upscaled from 5k to 10k with AI and I was supprised how little difference there was between them. Try it, it has 30days free trial version.
It all depends whether your huge print will be looked at from close distance and then you need more detail in your textures, shaders etc, otherwise for far away viewing just a sharp clean image will do, small details won't be seen anyway.

Hi,
I think vegetation and light looks great but the cobble stone texture really messes up the whole effect.
Remember that the image is only as good as its weakest part, and in this case paving looks way less convincing that all the rest.
Fix the shader, add displacement, or even use real geometry/scanned surface and it will be top notch.

[Max] Daily Builds / Re: Caustics playground!
« on: 2019-05-28, 11:53:05 »
The new caustics solver does not work with volumetric media yet. Caustics in volumes will be resolved using the classic path tracing, which will be a loooot slower and probably almost non-visible.

By the way, is the camera placed underwater here? If so, the IOR should be different - you should create a Corona material with refraction level 1 and refraction IOR of 1,33 and use it as the global volume material. :)

Thanks Maru!
And no camera is not under water, idea behind this was just to have a thin water surface on top of the glass to achieve nice caustics penetrating the well.
But what you proposed sounds cool, I will use your tip and do the underwater version later today ;)

I spent some time today testing Corona 4 release candidate. I must say I'm in love with this release, can't wait when it's officially available.
Attached the image taken from under the pool of water, testing caustics and learning Grow Fx.
Are volumetrics not supported while using caustics yet? Out of curiosity I rendered version without caustics enabled and volumetric pass looks completely different.
Anyways, I'm amazed how quickly corona handled those!

Hi Maru,
Great to hear that, thanks for your help on this!
We will download the latest daily later this week and test affected files.
I'll let you know if there's anything wrong.
Cheers!

[Max] Feature Requests / Re: Corona Tiles
« on: 2019-05-16, 12:42:58 »
+1 The only alternative for this that I know is Wall&Tiles from Vizpark, however we had some serious troubles with it in the past and never used it again. I think they based their script partially on Bercon Tiles and this is what was causing some issues in our case.

Hi guys,
Are there any news on this issue? Our team has to go back to one of our old projects and we are having huge troubles opening the files. It's very important that we can use the stuff we produced at earlier stages, we cannot afford rebuilding things from scratch. It's quite urgent.
As mentioned in my previous posts, the issue is most likely associeted with proxies.
Any help will be much appreciated, thanks!

[Max] General Discussion / Re: Scatter development insights
« on: 2019-04-26, 11:23:31 »
Great to see scatter being developed. Is that showcasing features of Scatter Pro that there were some rumours about or is it a standard scatter available in Corona?
I guess some of the stuff you showed here is already possible with advanced scattering techniques, using multimap, distance texture etc, but it's quite often very slow to work with.
Can't wait to see new features available though!

Outstanding!

I've been using Pulze scene manager for a while and it is quite cool. It also lets you set up all different light and layers scenarios for each camera.
It's a paid solution though. https://pulze.io/products/scene-manager

This is brilliant. I really like soft and calm feeling you achieved. What are the textures you used for the fabrics? They look very sophisticated.

Select custom installation method and tick the 2020 max version. In my case it only had my default old max 2016 selected, and thus wasn't installing 2020.

[Max] General Discussion / Re: Corona 1.3 Benchmark
« on: 2019-03-22, 12:57:35 »
I've used corona benchmark a lot recently to test some workstations with OC that would be used as rendernode, I've noticed a big difference in watt consumption and temperature of cores between the benchmark and the actual render with v2/3, to the point that I dropped the benchmark completely. I assume it's because the latter uses the new AVX instrunction and a more recent version of embree, among other changes. Are there any plans to release an updated version of the benchmark? I believe it would be helpful also to show the difference between the newer CPUs.

Hi, I also think update to Corona Benchmark would be good. In our case overclocked i9 machines tested with Benchmark 1.3 were completely fine (while running Corona 2.0 on daily basis), but they all started to overheat once we updated renderers to Corona 3.0. (temperatures over 105C). I believe new benchmark could prevent such incidents, adjusting overclocking settings would be easier knowing Corona's behaviour in latest updates.

Hi guys.
Is there any chance this might be resolved in the nearest future?
I tested RailClone recently mainly with an intention to use it to create more complicated floor tiling patterns, but without Corona understanding how RC assigns IDs to its objects it doesn't make sense to invest in it.
Thanks,
Michal

I'd definitely would like to see more development on Corona Scatter too. I personally use Corona Scatter in most situations, and only switch to Forest Pack if really needed.
It's simplicity wins the Forest Pack's messy interface for me. No question Forest Pack is way more advanced, but for everyday use 70% of it's advanced features is not needed.

If only it had features like control over the scale of each separate scattered object (within instanced objects menu), simple exclude include with option to mark the areas with a brush, and option to save your setups, it would be a perfect tool.
Using distance maps and advanced scattering techniques unfortunately also slows Corona Scatter down a lot.

Anyways. Would be awesome to see Corona Scatter Pro at some point.
