Hardware / Re: workstation build 6-10k €
« on: 2023-01-13, 07:50:12 »

The issue is ram though, it's ddr5, do the motherboards allows us to have 128gb yet with 7950x yet? Last time I checked it wasn't an option but I need to do more research. Also is the price higher? Defo worth considering this before hand.

Wow I didn’t know about this issue. Less then 128gb is definitely a dealbreaker for me. Is this a thing with intels 13900k as well?

Thanks for your advice on waiting Nejc Kilar, but unfortunately I’m cant really wait right now, maybe at most one month and I don’t think anything can change in this time.

What seems frustrating is that one would expect the price of 3990x to drop two years later but is in fact even higher.
Reading the forums and seeing everyone talk about the 7950x i wonder if it's not worth it to make 2 workstations with 7950x for the price of one 5995x or 3990x.

Hi guys,

Looking to make a new workstation/rendering machine build for our office, with a 6-10K budget.

We have another machine with a 3990x which we are happy with but I am surprised that the price is even higher than 2 years ago when I did the build.
As I'm not very up to date with current processors I would like to know which cpu would you recomend to base a build on?

Thanks

Hello,

Since the last two projects I am getting random black frames when rendering animations and also I find this errors device or ressource busy.

I am using Corona version: 7 (Hotfix 1) Full-speed, Non-debug, MaxSDK 2020 Build timestamp: Aug 11 2021 10:53:33  Defines: Wide RGB

It happend once before on another animation. Tryed on different computers, also renderd localy. Frames are 1920x1080, and it happens even on 3990x+128gb ram, also on some xeons or other computers.

I have also submited a ticket, but I have no reply yet, maybe someone has encountered this before?

Hardware / Re: New Laptop for architecture studies

For just temporary workload addition, the new Dell XPS 17. This is the first laptop that got close (and in many areas surpassed) the Macbook Pro 16.

Hi Juraj do you think this still holds true? Or a laptop with a 4900H amd processor like Zephyrus G14 would be a better option?

Thanks agentdark45 !

I will try to do the low clock ram test.  To give you more info the full specs are:

TR 2990WX
Asus ROG ZENITH EXTREME ALPHA
GTX 1080Ti
Corsair Dominator Platinum 64GB
DDR4 3000MHz CL15
Cooler Enermax LiqTech TR4 II RGB 360
SSD Samsung 860 EVO
Seasonic Prime 1300W Platinum
Thermaltake A500 Aluminum case

I usually find it frozen after more hours of rendering but often it is working while rendering, but once we stop the render it goes into this half dead state where we could click certain buttons like the win start button but nothing else (restart, task manager, max are not responding). We also have to dual xeons in the same office that never freeze like this even though software/scenes are the same an all.

Hi, I don't know if this has been implemented since. But sure it would be much easier to have a tonemap/lightmix element. Of course there are workarounds like saving .confs and .exr's but why not have an easy version right inside the vfb. This would be very useful especially for animations.

Hi guys!

I need your advice. We have a 2990wx in the office, that likes to freeze almost every day. I understand that TR's are moody with some types of memory.
Do you guys have any recommendations for a specific type of memory that can make the system stable?

here is what we have now

TR 2990WX
Asus ROG ZENITH EXTREME ALPHA
Corsair Dominator Platinum 64GB
DDR4 3000MHz CL15

thanks!

@tiago Thanks! Actually there was no beastly pc involved, corona handled the scene pretty well. Just my 3 yr old 5960x 64gb ram and a gtx970 did the trick. With the full scene parsing times got high and interactive took a while to start but render times were good.

@d.sing Thank you, I appreciate it.

@romullus Thanks, I'll have a closer look. I usually find arroway ok for furniture, I'll see if I find something that tiles well on large length. I liked the sharp veneer in the example and the seamless tiling on a large surface.

Hi, I think the banana plant you are talking about is a really nice model shared by Jakub Cech on behance.
