Hardware / Re: Intel Xeon E5-2960 0 quite slow renderings

Yes, that's the downside to a brand name machine, proprietary components, limited space etc so that it is hard to modify it in any way. Advantage is not having to build it, but non-modifiable is the price that comes at.

Do you have a scene that you can share (directly, not publicly, if need be), as I could test it here since it's the same 2 CPUs, though different brand. With the warning as noted previously that my temps are imbalanced so for some reason one CPU runs hotter than the other, which shouldn't be happening :)

If you have anything publicly shareable, maybe some others with these CPUs can test and compare. The Benchmark result for this machine was 1m 37s, and pretty sure I am seeing that difference between the previous 3930K outside of just the benchmark too (though haven't tested recently).

[Max] Resolved Feature Requests / Re: LightMix Denoiser

You can enable Denoising for each of the indiviudal LightMix elements - here's the part in the tutorial video for Max:

And attached is where to find the same option in Corona for C4D

EDIT - when you apply denoising to the individual LightMix elements, then it shows up the in VFB LightMix solution, no need to combine them individually in Post.

Corona for C4D A6 hotfix 1 released!

Primarily this fixes crashes of some other renderers when Corona for C4D is installed alongside them on macOS, plus should fix some reported UI issues such as "VFB can't be closed" and "VFB or Picture Viewer freeze" (mainly on macOS).

Download from the usual location! https://corona-renderer.com/download/

Hmm same dual Xeons here, only it's a Dell - never looked til this post, but sure enough the temps are 74ish for one Xeon, and 82ish for the other, so must be something up with them both running at different temps. Going to have to do the thermal paste and cooler reseat I would say, it was bought refurbished so I guess good to check that kind of thing! That said, in my testing, the new machine is faster as expected from the benchmark results than my previous 3930K, so can't say that in general I am seeing slower renders. Not sure of when the thermal throttle kicks in either.

I may be misunderstanding the question :) Looked ok here, two images attached - took the main body of the shaderball, applied a different material to some polys to get a multi/subobject material, changed the scale in the Triplanar and it seemed to work ok. Just random test materials used. Let me know if the scenario you are looking at is different!

And for tests from the real world, in the Recent Spaces interviews they discuss how they saw render times reduced by 50 to 75%:

[Max] I need help! / Re: Resume animation render

So not the other resume, fair enough! I'd still be intrigued if someone comes up with a Max script for the second way, could be handy for "quick render of whole animation to see how it looks, now pick up from the previous and do more passes for final quality" - and even just to know whether it is technically possible via Maxscript or no, for pure curiosity's sake :)

Ah, I see on what they may have been asking, re-render all frames from a certain number of passes to a new higher number of passes. If anyone comes up with a maxscript, I'd be interested to see it :)

Don't know the size limit in Mantis off the top of my head, but to get by in the meantime whether it's meant to be failing with that size or not, can use

What I do is this, if the animation was stopped normally, simply start it again and set a different start frame in Max (to the first one that was not rendered).

If the animation stopped abnormally, start it again but from the last frame that was rendered (so, overwrite the last frame, just in case it was corrupted in any way).

As a note, always render an animation to separate images for each frame, and turn it into a movie format in post, otherwise you do have to render from the beginning again. (edit, well, depending on your movie format - many need a complete file to work, though I think .mov will work up to the last frame it has, in which case you could just start from the last frame that was in there, and combine the partial .mov with the new parts in post - but to avoid heartache, simply render to separate image files :) )

One other thought, no other input devices connected at the time, like a tablet etc?

TY Tizanio!

Glad you found OBS useful! I think it is great (I use it for recording tutorials).

So it only happens when the mouse passes over into a 3ds Max viewport, from what I can see.

Is it only happening in this scene, or in all scenes? If only this one, then it sounds more like scene specific than related to the mouse. If all scenes, could be the mouse, it could be sending out some signal that makes Max treat it as an update to the scene.

If I encountered this, I'd test with a different scene. If it stops happening with other scenes, any unusual plugins or materials in the scene? Something is indicating that there's a change in the scene, so wondering if there's anything in there that might be actively refreshing whenever the mouse passes over a viewport?

If it still happens with other scenes, could unplug the mouse entirely and enable mouse keys (http://www.isunshare.com/windows-10/2-ways-to-turn-on-mouse-keys-in-windows-10.html) and see if the issue still occurs.

Others may have other suggestions too!

I can say with hand on heart that it's the first render I've ever seen of a halfway melted wine gum Napoleon :) As you say, concept dev can take you to all sorts of strange - but wonderful! - places. TY for sharing how it was done :) And now I crave sweets again!
