Off-Topic / Re: Structurising a texture library
« on: 2018-07-21, 14:39:59 »
I guess that makes sense as it can’t open a .mat file, and the only way I’ve found myself would be to save a max scene with a material on a suitable object. Problem is that even if one can use Connecter to categorize them, there is no way to conveniently load them or apply them in a scene so pretty useless really.

Oh well, the search goes on.

No one is using 3D Connecter for materials?

I use it currently for Models, IES, HDRi and building material library. But I know Daniel Reutersward and others use it for textures too I think.

Could you develop a little on how you are using it for materials? Afaik 3D Connected can't display a .mat file. Are you creating a max file for every material? That would seam very tedious but perhaps there is a smart workflow for this?

I want a check box in Windows Settings that says "Don't ever reboot without my consent"

I never had so much freedom inside of Vray as I have in Corona.

Interesting statement, how so specifically?

I think Revit's grip on the CAD market is getting stronger and stronger, and from what I can tell that goes for Europe as well.

Having said that I agree partly with the previous poster in that few render straight from CAD, at least not to the point where something like Corona would be useful, but I think you can ask your colleagues at Vray about that since they have a Revit version. Enscape's integration and realtime feedback makes value of the additional gained quality from a standalone render miniscule, and architects wants either a fast good overview or they want it perfect. You won't achieve either from the current Vray implementation.

What would be extremely useful would be a tailor-made translator from Revit/Archicad into 3ds Max and Corona (or Vray) that lets you map material replacements in a clever way. The existing Max import is a hassle at best and a lot of material work.

Love that, but in all fairness it is a quite simple scene.

[Max] General Discussion / Re: Corona training

Recording these classes would be a wonderful product that you could charge for, for those of us that can't go, but could perhaps discourage some people from actually going then? Hopefully the networking and opportunities to ask questions etc make it all worth it even if recordings were made available.

The article from the Redshift guys was very interesting, it feels as if we are approaching a crossroad in the market. It can't be easy positioning a product like Corona on a 2-3 year outlook with all this market chatter and noise. I think it is a general impression that real-time alternatives are progressing faster than traditional render engines, and not only due to hardware.

Enscape for Revit is an incredibly automatic solution compared to anything I've seen so far, and although I personally dislike Lumion's workflow it too can generate decent imagery close to real-time. The Redshift guy seems to argue that real-time such as Unreal/Nvidia RTX is faster because they don't have to consider extensive code support for heavy render algoritms. Blender's Evee is further complicating the landscape by offering a real-time modeling environment, and then supposedly a similar in end result renderer in Cycles, when you want to squeeze out extra quality.

This makes me worried about the approach by Chaos/Corona. VrayRT seems to be a Vray offer for GPU but still uncompromising and therefore not that real-time, and Corona seems to reject the whole GPU trend altogether.

If 3ds Max would announce something like Evee, with the option to render and bake in Vray or Corona, I would be fine but right now I'm wondering what the value proposition is in 3 years when some of the things we've seen in Evee/Unreal is more than good enough for 99% of the architectural market. Our clients want VR today, not tomorrow.

General CG Discussion / Re: 3dsmax 2019 4 New features!

How does this compare in practice with the Substance plugin that now supports Corona?

However, it does not sound as if user materials will find it's way into 2.0 either.

For me, the only thing missing is corona.

The other big obstacle is being able to reuse about a decade of collected and produced models and scenes in 3ds Max/Vray/Corona format.

I was looking at some more blender stuff... and I really hope they will come up with LGPL C++ API, so we can join in ;)

So is your code or approach different than that of Vray, as I understand there is a Vray version for Blender?

The sad fact is that I'm not particularly interested in learning Blender or jump ship from Max if I don't have to, and it would seem logical that Max sooner or later also will have a PBR viewport. Unfortunately I guess in the case of Autodesk it will mean later.  :(

44
Will it also be possible to add your own materials in version 2?

45
Even though are many good videos, I think some of them could use an update for new users as workflows and best practices often change between versions.
