Yeeeyyyyy! Great news

There's no crash report - it just freezes forcing me to 'hard' quit.
I render to PV as I want to save out a layered 16bit file, which is impossible from the VFB as far as I know.

[C4D] Bug Reporting / crash (freeze) when rendering to PV.
« on: 2023-01-23, 11:27:45 »
Hallo. Actually this has been a problem for years. I never bothered reporting it as it was more of an inconvenience than catastrophic....

Very often I'm working in the Interactive Viewport - then when I'm happy with the result I press Render To Picture Viewer without first aborting the Initeractve Viewport. This causes C4D to freeze up and I need to quit from the task manager.

It happens frequently but not all the time. Doesn't seem to be file specific.

On Redshift it should take 5 min.

Yeah right* - I doubt it if you want the same image quality. Whenever I've tried GPU engines, they're fast when they're cutting corners, but once you crank up the samples etc to get an equivalent image quality (esp on glass etc) then the render times get a LOT longer. 5k sounds like a still image - just send it to a farm for the final.

*Not saying it wouldnt be quicker tho'

I'm bumping his again as I'm using lots of light gobo style lighting in a current project. But its really hard work using the corona lights.

I know corona is 'physical first'. But to make images look 'real' I need softox reflections with a natural looking fall-offs at the edge, and spotlights I can focus with gobos - just like the real world.
Would love to knowe of there is any movement on this. I dont see anything on the trello....

Yours in eternal hope.

[Max] General Discussion / Re: GPU ! RTX
« on: 2022-12-21, 09:47:56 »
For ease of use and beautiful looking images Corona is THE best engine IMHO. And my lo-res look-dev stages are not slower than comparable GPU renderers as far as I can tell. There's also something very useful about being able to CPU render on anything (ie my old MBP) if necessary at a clients location. And not being locked into using Nvidia proprietary technology on a workstation.

These are big plusses that I dont want to compromise on. But you know - if you want to outupt real-time or lots of animations then GPU is probably the way to go. There will be some compromises.  But just run a copy of Redshift or whatever for those case-scenarios as well as Corona for the breauty stills.

I'm still searching for the 'best of both worlds' solution. In theory Vray/V-ray GPU looks promising. But in my (limited) tests its not as quick/functional as RS or as good looking/user friendly as Corona. So the worst of both worlds in effect.

[C4D] I need help! / Re: Art on soda can material question
« on: 2022-12-08, 11:48:55 »
If you want to make it in a single material you ll need to make a mask to put in the metalness slot (less metal in the type area by making it grey). Indeed, stacking or using layered material will give more control.

Legacy material or Physical material?

Are you stacking materials. using layered material or trying to do it in a single material?

The route depends on the method. But basically the painted metal areas should be just a bit metallic. You can achieve this by reducing the amount on the metalness slider in Physical or tweaking the IOR in Legacy (in which case you'd also need some of the label color in the reflection colour channel)

I cant help but notice that the Corona Devs have always been open and halpful. But the Chaos Licencing department is prone to mistakes and seems pretty user-unfriendly.

Please take note Corona team. The goodwill and evangelising userbase that Corona has built up is quickly eroded by this sort of thing.

Hmmm, I had a quick look - but didn't notice anything obviously wrong with the set-up. And yes, it does render rather slowly! Sorry I can't be more useful

Please send the scenefile otherwise it's impossible to tell anything oubout this.

Shadowcatcher is generally used for images using backplates AFAIK. In your case I'd expect you to use a solid colour in the Direct Visibility override slot and to add the same colour into the Environment slot of the shadowcatcher material.

If you have a real floor/cove in the scene etc then I'm not sure it will work properly or of that is the purpose of the shadowchatcher.

I'm happy to be informed otherwise tho'

[C4D] General Discussion / Re: Corona C4D Models/textures

I can also highly recommend Bentanji.com - their models are all available as c4d/corona as well as 3dsm/vray

[C4D] General Discussion / Re: Licensing question
« on: 2022-11-07, 08:02:08 »
While I agree that the constant checking is totally user-unfriendly and a massive pain in the ass. I seem to remember that there was a way of having (borrowing?) an offline licence?
Perhaps one of the Corona staff could refresh my memory as it may have changed in the latest licencing update...?

I didnt expect it to go sour this quickly after Chaos takeover

Reminders, fwiw - it's been 7 years since we merged. It was a merger, not a takeover. Price changes would be happening whether or not the merger had taken place. Just to keep the record straight :)

Nobody expects the price to stay the same Tom. I guess people are wary of some of the Chaos changes as they can be rather  chaotic. The communication wasn't done well and had errors.
