[C4D] I need help! / Scene Converter Details

I'm trying to find details on what the options in the Scene Converter tool actually do. I'm talking about:

Metalness-->Autodetect, All Metal and No Metal

Convert Shaders-->As Selected and All In Selected Objects

I see a new Cinema Bitmaps option too.

I keep seeing mentions of Chaos Vantage, but never knew what it was. I watched part of a Chaos video and the main feature, from what I saw, was real-time (or close to it) previews. Isn't that one of the great features of Corona and V-ray, and Octane and Redshift for that matter? We have ability to have good real-time previews and updates as you work. Why  is Vantage needed if the engines already provide a similar function?

So I'm exploring some materials in the Cosmos browser. Oh, here's a nice looking asphalt material, let's take a look. I hit download. Perfect. When I click import, it says "You need Vray and Vantage". What is that all about? Why am I being served Vray materials in Corona? So far, I've only found two, but am surprised. Is this a mistake or is their a filter to only show me Corona-compatible materials?



[C4D] Bug Reporting / Text Cut Off

Any time I export a render from the VFB, the text will be cut off at the bottom. Sometimes more than this example. I can usually still see the words enough to continue, but sometimes not.

I'm making a small restaurant mockup. I setup some basic tables and chairs. There are some scaling issues in this scene due to some LiDAR scanning, so the scale of the chairs was huge. I converted them to mesh and they reappeared in the viewport. They did NOT appear in any render however. When you convert some models, Cosmos included, sometimes it makes some sort of parent object and a child. You can't select anything on the parent and it has the material on it. I don't understand how that works.

So, I merged those two pieces of the chair into one mesh. Boom. Everything appears and renders as expected. Render Instances or Multi-Instance don't affect this issue.

Since this sample scene is so small, I've attached it directly here. This scene is new and there are no scene scaling issues.

Wanted to give the latest incarnation of the scene converter a go with a city street scene I got from Evermotion. It has over 200 V-ray materials. Upon opening the file, there was a window asking about how to convert things, figuring it would use these settings when I hit the convert button Well, it seems to be doing something, although at a snail's pace. There is no visual indication Corona is thinking which is frustrating. Only think is the textures slowly appeared in the viewport which is progress. V-ray will just appear a solid grey color for me. The Material Manager as you can see in the image is doing something. It has taken 30 min. to get to this point. How long can I expect this to take? Also, is this the same as if I had clicked the Convert Scene button? It is unclear what exactly is going on.

I wanted to try some dome mapping before setting up an actual street scene. I'm trying all sorts of HDRIs with equirectanglar distortion. Some look okay, but most are just impossible to work with.

What should I be looking for when choosing images for dome mapping? I assume equirectangular, but not 100% sure. I'm placing a car and want a big city street scene. Any advice is greatly appreciated.

Okay, so I have a client that sells all sorts of Italian food. They came up with these little delicious-looking dough nuggets with frosting and cinnamon. Being people that think things can be created with a snap of the finger, they want to launch this product and this is the only photo they took and sent to us. This image was smoothed out with Photoshop and edited a bit, but it's not good. Bad lighting, depth of field is wrong and lots of noise.

I can make all of this in C4D and Corona, except for the sugary frosting effect. I'm preparing to tell them I can't do it easily if at all, but wanted to toss it out here. Also if you have seen a material for sale that might look close, I'm open to that too. Thanks.

[C4D] I need help! / MultiPass Question

OK so I've used this showroom shot many times. It's for TV. The goal was to get the vehicle layout perfect so the cars don't need to be moved at all. Each vehicle is rendered out with an alpha channel. The room rendered out separately EXCEPT, the shadows and reflections are burned into the floor. Green screen actors are then dropped in between the layers on the video side of things. Works very well, except sometimes they want to move the car a little, but since the shadows are burned into the floor, it is very limited. Keep in mind I have a Take set up for each car so I can easily render what each car needs.

I can easily get a vehicle with the shadow either in its own file or embedded with the RGB image of each car using the Shadow Catcher material. My question is, how can I also separate just the car's reflections from the floor? I know this might be a problem if I have any bump, displacement or other effect on the tile floor. Thought I'd tackle that later if I can get the reflection thing to work.

This image is a rough first render. Layers in video might look like this:

RGB of Car with Alpha
Shadow with Multiply
Reflection with Screen

I'm very frustrated here. I have this house model, imported as an FBX. The texture files links are broken. No problem since that usually happens. Pull up the Asset manager and relink everything so they all have checkmarks. Perfect. BUT, the materials in the Material Manager remain black after rendering them. If I bring the Asset Manger back up, everything is a red X again. I even tried putting the project file in the same directory. Nope. I noticed in the file path there is a "maps\." I'm on a Mac and don't usually see backwards slashes. If I replace it with a forward slash it will appear to link, but not really. I tried globalizing, localizing. Nothing.

As you can see in the screen grab, some materials I manually deleted the "maps/" and the icon in the material browser looks good, but doesn't render. If I create a new material and link to one of the maps, works as expected (Testrender image attached. Grass now shows). There are 200 materials in this scene and I'm trying to not create everything. Never had this problem before.

The scene was originally created using Max, but I'm using the .obj version since the materials came in as standard C4D. The .fbx file came in as node based PBR I think, and was a mess.

Any ideas?

I assume this isn't possible at the moment, but it would be a very nice perk for us Corona customers to have access to a form of the V-Ray Bridge to allow us to convert a scene to Corona. Not render, just allow a conversion. I can't tell you how much time this would save me. I buy a good amount of models and it hard to find C4D+Corona all ready to go. Many model do however, offer C4D+V-Ray. If I could just hit that convert button and get 90% there, I'd be a happy man.

Since they are both Chaos products and it wouldn't take away from their customers, this seems like a no-brainer to me.

I have noticed over the years that many times when you grab an image to use for lighting, it may also come with a low-res blurry version called Environment, a medium res clear version-2k usually and one large file coming in a 16k or so.

What is the proper use of that small blurry file? Environment override? What's the advantage of using the blurry image versus just letting the sky provide reflections?

I know there are some posts about farms, but they're all over the place and many are very old.

I have some architectural type animations I need to do. Static room and simple, slow camera moves. It's just too much for my old iMac Pro. A 10 second move can easily be 24 hours with moderate number of passes and denoising. There is a long list of farm services on Corona's web site. It's a little daunting. So far, Rebus is the only site that I can input my exact CPU. The others I have to guess a comparable chip and fingers crossed.

For Corona peeps that have used farms, what is your top five companies I should look at for price/performance? I assume I'll have to be careful with shared textures and the Corona Bitmap problem.

The other question is, I have been using the daily builds, but not using any specific feature of v10. In the past, I have rendered newer Corona version on nodes with a lesser version of Corona without problem. I'm sure I could go back to v9 and save again. Thanks for any advice.

Gallery / Endless Engines Community Challenge

I didn't find out about this challenge until two weeks ago, but I managed to get something together by the deadline. It's put on by Clint Jones (goes by pwnisher online), formerly of Corridor Crew. Great YouTube channel if you haven't checked it out. They break down all sorts of VFX shots with industry experts, have their own in-house challenges and great how-to videos. Any way, Clint has does these in the past where he provides a starter scene with some elements that needs to stay mostly intact, but you can do anything within that space. Their are only 120 frames and he strings them together into a super long collage. Then they pick the top 100, then the top 10 for prizes. I didn't have much time to put into this, so I chose a theme where I didn't have to rig a car or character, mostly straight out of Corona v10 daily. I added a little smoke and exhaust fire FX in AE. I also chose a nostalgic theme, at least here in America. The young Boy Scouts will make these wooden cars called Pinewood Derby with a kit and certain parameters and race them against the other scouts' cars. Gravity only so they have to think about aerodynamics and weight distribution. I built these cars based on the cars I helped my son build. The red one got second place overall.

This is my entry. This clip loops four times. My idea was the cars are racing on their own when nobody is around. Fun and good practice. If you search YouTube for Endless Engines, many of posted their entries. Lots of creative stuff.
