Title: subsurface
Post by: celmar on 2020-09-24, 16:10:35
Hello!I have a short animation with a statue, and there is a lot of parts with subsurface scattering...   I know that it is the rule of the game with sss, but, as the render times are really long (1280 x 720, 12mn by frame to get acceptable noise), does somebody have a tip to shorten the render time??? thank you for help!!!!

here is a 10 mn render, without the background... as you can see, it's still noisy... What is surprising to me is the time of denoising (1 s)... I use the C7 daily build... A so short denoising time is ok?
processor is i9-9900K , with 48 Go Ram...

Which Denoiser? Any bump map applied? The Corona Denoiser applies less denoising to surfaces with bump (so as to preserve the bump effect), and could be that it is skipping this object and so going very fast if indeed it uses bump (you could try one of the AI Denoisers instead, which are "blind" when it comes to what the material in the scene is and apply the effect equally everywhere).

If you are willing to sacrifice some quality to get better render times, you can try disabling all SSS effects, and using translucency instead.

Did a small test here and have to say that I think the render was rather quick. 20 passes, render time 2:54. Denoising was Corona High Quality. Looks pretty clean. Care to share your SSS settings?
