Tiiiiiiiiiiight! Is this how mesh smoothing is done in mayaToCorona now? Does it still render using smooth mesh preview if it isn't enabled in the viewport?

No, corona does not have a subdivision method which can be used in this way. So it only reads the smooth proxy from maya, it is more or less the same way it works in 3dsmax.
