Title: max 2023.2 crashing when closing render setup dialog

the new max update crashes 100% of the time, when closing the render setup dialog.
Apparently this issue only occurs with corona, vray seems to work fine.
tested on 3 machines.

Not happening here, Corona 9 Daily from Sept 12th, Win 10. Also I have devel/debug open too.

Post by: TomG on 2022-09-16, 16:57:24: Oooh now it has started happening to me too, ever since I tried pressing F10, now I get the crash even after restarting Max. Strange, as I hadn't run into this before and I updated Max on the day of their update. Anyway, giving the minidump from my crash to the devs.

There is another bug, stopping you from opening scenes pre-update.

Post by: Frood on 2022-09-19, 20:10:47: Strange one. If you start max, and do a (Corona) "Reset settings" in render setup -> Scene, it is not happening. And additionally you can load any (other) scene without this issue subsequently using that max instance. I compared all renderer properties before and after the reset and restored them exactly as they have been -> no issue as well. So maybe related to Render setup -> system settings. I cannot see any difference in the files storing the system settings though.

Thanks for the additional information. I remember at least having corrupt stacks using chamfer in the 2021.1/.2/.3 update path as well, but no hangs.

Post by: romullus on 2022-09-20, 10:24:25: I can only imagine what mess it will be when 3ds Max will get boolean as a modifier. I developed a habit to always collapse the stack and reset transforms as soon as possible and potentially that saved me a lot of headaches, but unfortunately that's not always possible with WIP files and when upgrading the Max, those files suffers the most :[

Speaking of current issue, how likely that autodesk will issue the fix? Or we'll have to wait till next update?

Right now we are not planning on that, we have been in contact with the guys at Autodesk and they are looking into a fix for 3ds max itself.

So hopefully they will manage to patch it and fix the root cause.

you can set any renderer that is not Corona to default and then have to switch back to Corona every time, to avoid the problem.
but that obviously still sucks.

I was up till 2:00 AM uninstalling and reinstalling max didn't help. I have to finish 3 projects by mid next week. why is this happening? so no fix to 8.2? why?

As I said before, this is an Autodesk bug and really needs to be addressed on their side.

We managed to patch it for the v9 daily builds, but right now don't have plans to port it back to v8.

I don't know if it will help you, but someone said that assigning a different renderer in Render Setup and then switching back to Corona will avoid the crash. Need to do it every time you restart Max, or assign a different default renderer. Hope that can help!

The file opening issue with Chamfer fixed in 2023.2.2.

Then you can try to put this in script/startup folder.
Either
C:\Program Files\Autodesk\3ds Max 2023\scripts\Startup
or
C:\Users\[username]\AppData\Local\Autodesk\3dsMax\2023 - 64bit\ENU\scripts\startup

just save any .ms file something like "coronafix,ms"

renderers.current = DefaultScanlineRenderer()
renderers.current = CoronaRenderer()

I'm not sure about this.
If Corona is the only plugin that has issue, why would Autodesk do anything?
Also even tho they might do something, I think Corona should release fix until then.

This is fixed in 3ds max 2023.3. I have tested and there is no longer a crash when opening/closing the render setup dialogs.
