[Max] General Discussion / 3ds max SunPositioner and Corona?
« on: 2018-07-02, 13:57:24 »
I just found that 3ds max has a new (ish, I just hadn't noticed it) SunPositioner that is a lot less "clicky" to use than the old Daylight System assembly. I can get Corona to work with it, but I'm not sure if I should? Are there any downsides to using it (besides the fact that the sun doesn't show up in the light lister, but that's another question)?

Yes, I thought so. Thanks.

Is it a bad idea to have 1.7.4 installed on my workstation, but installing Corona 2 on our farm? Would I run into trouble if I wanted to use DR? I'm in the middle of a big project and don't want to switch versions before I know that 2 is bug free-ish, but my co-workers could use some of the new features and would probably want to switch.

I've been archvizing for almost 9 years now and I've never had to use zbrush or care about edge loops, even though I have the knowledge. Marvelous is good to know, but for curtains, blankets, cushions, pillows etc, you can stay in the shallow end of the pool - just follow a few simple tutorials and you're good to go. If you're looking into Unreal you will have to clean up models and make optimized UV's, so that's something to learn.

When I started, we modeled everything, from buildings (from DWG:s) and furniture. I started in the games industry and have no problem modeling stuff, but I'm becoming more and more lazy. DesignConnected, Turbosquid, 3dsky etc often have what I need and why spend the time on a chair when I can buy it for a few $ and be able to reuse it later? That said, if a client have a list of specific models/makes that you can't buy, you will have to model it. If you find yourself in that situation and can't model, you're stuck.
I second a lot of what mferster said, I'd say I buy at least 50% of the furniture (and all plants and humans).

"Interactive no longer starts with temporarily full render resolution for first time. This fixes excessive lag when starting interactive for the first time while having big render resolution set."

Wow, finally. This is driving me nuts on a daily basis in 1.7.

[Max] I need help! / Auto exposure?
« on: 2018-05-23, 07:33:09 »
I'm doing a walkthrough animation of an apartment that have very different light intensity depending on what room you're in and could really use an auto exposure feature. Is there any way to do it using 3rd party plugins or some smart trick?

hi, is there any way to make older max compatible with osl? something like plugins??

I don't think so, it was the only big update in Max 2019 (if you don't like 90's looking procedural wood).

Override can now be excluded from all glass materials, light materials, portal materials, and/or unsupported materials

Awesome...!!!

Yes, nice. But, and this might be a stupid question, what counts as a glass material? Refractive materials?

Amazing, Monkeybrother ! I'm definitely interested in testing your modified file, please :)

Regards.

Sure, attaching .osl file. It seems to be a bit sensitive, as in you have to do things the right way. If I made a big subdivided box and added a "per face" uvw map, it doesn't work (even if I unwelded vertices or even detached every face), and if I resize the polygon after applying the uv map it stretches and bends (it shouldn't happen, but I haven't investigated). So for best result: create a plane with the correct size, apply material and uv's ("per face" or "planar"), instance it. I've just done some quick tests, so I'm sure there's an explanation.

I'm not 100% sure that the attached file is the latest one, the one I'm using, but let me know if it doesn't work. Hopefully someone can make a less hacky version.

I got it working enough to be usable. You need to make some very minor changes to the VRay version to make it work in Corona: remove the first line and go through the code and remove references to VRay. If anyone wants it, I can upload the modified file later.

The attached image is a bunch of instanced planes with a Corona Multimap randomizing the diffuse bitmap.

Did a search for "geopattern" to see if anyone had asked for something similar and of course you had. Just wanted to +10 this. It would make a huge difference in realism if you could replace displacement/bump/opacity maps/etc with actual geometry at almost no cost. Have been watching the FStorm facebook group with jealousy.

Does it help if you restart the DR server application?
Have you already contacted us at support@corona-renderer.com ? (we have a similar report open, just not sure if you are the reporter)

No, restarting the DR server doesn't work, it just goes back to the same loop. Sometimes it helps for a while to restart the whole computer, but not on every computer and just for a day or two. And no, that was someone else.

A question for the developers maybe: will VRay be able to read Corona materials, and if so, will we be able to export a .vrscene with Corona materials and import them correctly in the Unreal VRay plugin? That would be really nice when VRay Unreal can bake lightmaps inside Unreal.

We still have big problems with our farm, to the point that we no longer rely on it. In the render window it just says "Render starting", "connection problems", repeat. On the farm computer it starts to load the scene, then says "terminate_soft" and repeats. One of 9 of our farm computers works, but they're all identical both in hardware and in software (installed from an image). Any ideas? I've thought I've fixed it a couple of times, but even if it seems to work for a while, it always eventually fails and keeps failing.
